ARC Review: Secrets In The Snow

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28645639-secrets-in-the-snow?from_search=true

Please Note:  I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This does not influence my opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
The young Jane Austen is not particularly interested in getting married, although she does find the mysterious Mr. Lefroy an intriguing possibility--but first she has to deal with the accusation that her cousin Eliza is a French spy, and solve a murder.

Review:
I wanted to love this book.  I hate writing negative reviews.  Since I adore Jane Austin (and most anything having to do with her), reading this "novel of intrigue and romance" was painful.  I have argued with myself over whether or not to even write any review at all.  But I feel part of my role as a reviewer is to help people steer clear of works that are a waste of time.  This gives me no joy to do this, but here it goes.

The story starts out pleasant enough, with Jane Austin being the house guest of one of her brothers.  Deep in reading, she is unobserved in the library when her brother gets news that their cousin, Eliza, is suspected of being a spy for the French.  Jane is incredulous as she has just invited Eliza for a visit.  Realizing the War Office has used Jane to lure Eliza into a trap, Jane sets out to warn her cousin.  A tale of intrigue?  That would have been fun.  But when a murder is introduced into the story, the narrative goes from riveting to ridiculous.   As an avid fan of Jane Austin and the Georgian era, I found the manners and actions of this book to be insulting.

One of the joys of reading a Jane Austin book is her keen observations on the manners of her time.  There were strict rules of conduct between men and women that had consequences.  Yet there are so many situations in Secrets In The Snow, by Michaela MacColl, that would never happen that I wonder if the author has researched the time period at all.  At one point in the story, Jane discovers a body in the snow.  She runs to get her brother (plausible) but then works with him and a male visitor to solve the crime.

Not in a million years would the males of a house let a female be involved in anything that serious.  The moment she would have told them, the men would have promptly told Jane to leave it to the men to deal with and shoo her out the library door.  It would not have occurred to a man of that time to think a woman was even capable of rational thought, let alone treat her as an equal!  They would also have immediately felt it was their duty to shield Jane from any potential scandal that could taint her marriageability in the future.

The book would have been much better if Jane had been told not to interfere, and then solved the murder with the added impediment of needing to be stealthy.  That would have been much more interesting and true to the era.

There are also several scenes between Jane and a character named Tom that would never happen.  No woman would ever walk alone with a man, hold hands with a man, or drink alcohol alone with a man without ruining her reputation.  And she would not allow a man to kiss her without, "Will you marry me?" escaping his lips first.  These may seem like quibbles, but these action are so out of place, that they make the whole story seem comical.

I also feel the attempts at foreshadowing future novels such as Pride and Prejudice to be insulting. Heaven forbid that Jane could be creative on her own.  No, she has to get "inspiration" from Tom.  He just happens to have five sisters (P & P), suggests improvements for Sense and Sensibility, and even tells Jane one day she could make a living out of writing her little stories.   Um, that would have been offensive to a woman of Jane's social class.

The resolution of this murder mystery is also a farce.  Since it is not my policy to write reviews with spoilers, I will not say who did the deed.  But, besides being painfully obvious, several people cover up for the murderer.  With her strong religious beliefs (her father was a clergyman), Jane would never be tempted to help someone get away with murder.

If you are a Jane Austin fan such as me, do not waste your energy on reading this book.  I know the author must have worked hard and I respect anyone who has completed a book and gotten it published.  But I truly wish she had stayed true to the time period.

ARC Review: How To Make Out by Brianna Shrum

Please Note:  I received an ARC copy of this book from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.  This does not influence the opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
Sixteen-year-old Renley needs three thousand dollars for the math club’s trip to New York City, and she knows exactly how to get it: she’s going to start a how-to blog where people pay for answers to all of life’s questions from a “certified expert.” The only problems: 1) She doesn’t know how to do anything but long division and calculus. 2) She’s totally invisible to people at school. And not in a cool Gossip Girl kind of way.

So, she decides to learn to do . . . well . . . everything. When her anonymous blog shifts in a more scandalous direction and the questions (and money) start rolling in, she has to learn not just how to do waterfall braids and cat-eye makeup, but a few other things, like how to cure a hangover, how to flirt, and how to make out (something her very experienced, and very in-love-with-her neighbor, Drew, is more than willing to help with).

As her blog’s reputation skyrockets, so does “new and improved” Renley’s popularity. She’s not only nabbed the attention of the entire school, but also the eye of Seth Levine, the hot culinary wizard she’s admired from across the home-ec classroom all year.

Soon, caught up in the thrill of popularity both in and out of cyberspace, her secrets start to spiral, and she finds that she’s forgotten the most important how-to: how to be herself. When her online and real lives converge, Renley will have to make a choice: lose everything she loves in her new life, or everyone she loves in the life she left behind.

Review:
I'm not fond of writing negative reviews.  Usually they are needlessly snarky and mean.  But I do feel a responsibility to steer people away from book that I think are problematic.  And so, with this in mind, I am going to expound upon why this book didn't work for me.

What I Didn't Like:
Situation:
Under the heading, "It could only happen in a novel" comes the idea that a person's blog is an instant hit (and a money-maker, to boot)!  NO WAY.  Having a hit blog is an essential part of this story, but I must say from my own experience, it takes a tremendous amount of dedication to create a popular blog.  And, even with such popularity, it is very difficult to make money from blogging.  As a blogger, I found this foundation to be insulting.

Cliched Tropes:
One of the most often used story lines in YA is the best friends who are meant for each other, if only they would give it a go.  I am not one for spoilers, but I will say that the guy, Drew, does something in this book that I consider unforgivable.  I just didn't see how Renley could get past it.

Cyber Disaster:
I have seen, first hand, the devastating effects of social media turning on young girls.  It is a life-altering event that has long-term consequences.  I think the author does a disservice to teens by downplaying what happens to Renley.  I know teens who have been threatened and had to switch schools after having issues with social media.  In this book, there are a few problems for Renley, but they seem to be easily blown over after just a few weeks.  Not realistic.

What I Did Like:
Theme:
I think the theme of the book, being true to yourself and not being seduced by popularity, is a worthy subject matter.  I just think that the situations and consequences were completely unrealistic.  I wish that it would have been less contrived, and more thoughtful in its delivery.

Recommendation:  Although the theme is thought-provoking, this book is too unrealistic to be believable.

ARC Review: The Demon Girl's Song

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29436000-the-demon-girl-s-song?from_search=true&search_version=service
Please Note:  I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This does not influence my opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):

More than anything, Andín dal Rovi wants to escape her small town life, helping her father in the store, watching her younger brother prepare to take the place at University she’d longed for.
Instead of escape, she gets a thousand-year-old demon stuck in her head, and she loses everything – her home, her family and her country.
In the quest to regain her identity, she finds herself racing against time to uncover the secrets of her world – and save it from utter annihilation.

Review:

Since becoming a book blogger and really delving into reading, I have noticed that if a character is gay, the book (no matter what subject it was SUPPOSED to be about) becomes an 'Issue' book.  It's as if some authors feel that being gay is the only important thing in a character's life.  That is why I really enjoyed The Demon Girl's Song, by Susan Jane Bigelow.  There are some gay characters, but it is only one aspect of their lives.  These people are allowed to be full characters, have big adventures,  AND have romance.  It was so refreshing to see this representation.

What I Liked:

Setting:

I liked the vagueness of the setting.  Since this is a fantasy book, the author has the freedom to create a world rich in it's own traditions.  There are emperors, kingdoms, and demons.  There is some technology, such as trains and electric lights, but only in the rich areas of the kingdom.  Sexism is alive and well in this universe.  There are plenty of reminders of what it must have been like for women around 120 years ago.

Andin:

This young woman is resilient, resourceful and going crazy when a demon jumps into her body.  I loved how she had to figure out how much control the demon had over her.  Since they blend together, she questions who she is.  Is she different from before the demon entered her body?  What would she be like without the demon?  It is our experiences that shape our personalities, after all.  Good and bad experiences help to form our lives.

The Romance:

I loved the romance in the book.  It is realistic and heartbreaking.  I don't want to spoil anything, so I am reluctant to get into details.  But I thought is was a very good depiction of how a romance such as this would pan out in that society.

What I didn't like:

The Ending:

As the book progressed towards the ending, I thought there was going to have to be a sequel in order to resolve all the loose ends.  But the author chose to end the book quickly, and (I felt) unrealistically.  I didn't understand what had happened.  Also, in the Epilogue, they mentioned a problem that would occur in 12 years, but there was no mention of how it was resolved.

If the ending had been stronger, this would have been a five star review.  But I am still giving it four stars, for the wonderful characters, unusual story, and a strong romance.

Bay Area Book Events #14

This has become such a monstrously large list, that I have decided to only show events four weeks in advance.  The master calendar will continue to show all the events I can find that are listed on each bookstore's site.

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area! I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest. I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human). If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section. Thanks.

All graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.
