One thing my mom was known for, but I was not, was her love of reading. I have never in my life seen anyone make such good use of the public library system as Rita. She would go online and reserve copious amounts of books (and DVDs), so all she would have to do was go to her local branch and pick them up. Then she would set up books in every room in the apartment. Going from room to room she would read whatever book was laid on a table. This made it possible for her to read three to four books at once! I would find this habit baffling, but she got a kick out of multi-tasking.
I didn't get why she loved books so much while she lived. Perhaps she was filling up her life with books to keep busy after my father died and she retired. Her passing two and a half years ago has definitely left a void in my life. And now I find I'm turning out to be very much like my mom. Using my own method, one book at a time, I read over 70 books last year.
I hope to use this blog to learn about myself, and get other people's views on how books have affected them. I look forward to when friends and family might look at my reading habit and say, "You're just like your mom!"
