ARC Review: The Space Between The Stars by Anne Corlett

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30981910-the-space-between-the-stars?ac=1&from_search=true
Please Note:  I received an advanced readers copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From Goodreads):
All Jamie Allenby ever wanted was space. Even though she wasn’t forced to emigrate from Earth, she willingly left the overpopulated, claustrophobic planet. And when a long relationship devolved into silence and suffocating sadness, she found work on a frontier world on the edges of civilization. Then the virus hit...

Now Jamie finds herself dreadfully alone, with all that’s left of the dead. Until a garbled message from Earth gives her hope that someone from her past might still be alive.

Soon Jamie finds other survivors, and their ragtag group will travel through the vast reaches of space, drawn to the promise of a new beginning on Earth. But their dream will pit them against those desperately clinging to the old ways. And Jamie’s own journey home will help her close the distance between who she has become and who she is meant to be...

Review:
I am an emotional reader, which means if a book is well-written, I become deeply invested in the story.  When a character is raging, I am raging.  When a character is confused, so am I.  Haunting and contemplative, The Space Between The Stars, by Anne Corlett, tugged at my soul.  This book explores what it would mean for humanity if all but a handful of people survived a catastrophic epidemic.  Would society reorganize in the same way?  Or would it mean a clean slate, a chance to live exactly as one liked?  The suspense and action of the survivor's journey is peppered with quieter moments of reflection that I found lovely and moving.  This is a book that will make anyone a fan of speculative fiction.

What I Liked:
Characters:
Jamie is an expert at running away from her problems.  After a long-term relationship crumbles, Jamie takes a job on a far-flung planet.  She doesn't want to deal with people, just focus on her work as a veterinarian.  When she finds herself alone after a devastating virus hits the universe, she is surprised to realize that she does crave human contact.  I loved following her evolution from avoiding any strong emotional attachment, to finding what it means to live without baggage.

Eventually, Jamie finds other survivors. Callan, the captain of the spaceship that picks her up, is another strong character with a past he is trying to avoid.  I pictured him as a young Harrison Ford type guy.

The other members of the rag tag group of survivors all have compelling backstories, particularly Rena.  Rena is a scientist who is also a religious zealot.  She is convinced that the virus is part of God's plan and sees a new world order emerging from the disaster.  But others feel this is just Rena's way of coping with the devastation.

Story:
I thought the story was very compelling.  There was a good mix of showing small details (would people even use money anymore?), and larger issues (would women be compelled to have babies to repopulate humanity?) that would confront the survivors.  I was floored by the class system that was re-emerging almost immediately.  The author is British and I can't help but wonder if this was a statement on the British class system, which is still significant in England today.

Beyond that, the story was full of moments where Jamie questions what it means to be a part of society.  Who gets to make the rules?  Do people have a choice to be part of the survivor group or can they set out on their own.  With few people left, some argue that the survivors have an obligation to stick together.  Others see this as an opportunity to steer their own ship and forge their destiny for themselves.

What I Was Mixed About:
Astronomical coincidences:
The author makes a point to mention that the death rate for this virus is 99.9999%, which means that the survival rate is 0.0001%.  Yet Jamie manages to find several people among the survivors that she knows.  And many of them also are British, and want to go back to Earth to a small village that is conveniently right near Jamie's hometown.  I know that this is essential to the plot, but having all those stars align stretches the story's credibility.

Overall, this is a book that made me think about society and the choices we make to either participate in it, or pull away from others.  I think great science fiction (or speculative fiction?) uses over the top situations as a means to explore deeper questions of humanity, and this book did just that.

ARC Review: Paper Hearts by Ali Novak

Please Note:  I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From Goodreads):
Felicity has her entire future planned. Ever since her older sister ran away, she's had the full weight of her mother's expectations on her shoulders. So she works hard to get straight As and save for college.

Except sometimes the best things in life are unplanned-like when Felicity meets a handsome, masked stranger while she is volunteering at a charity masquerade ball. She never thought he'd flirt with her. And she certainly never thought he'd turn out to be a member of the world-famous Heartbreakers band, Alec.

Then Felicity uncovers a shocking family secret. Suddenly, she, Alec, and her two best friends are off on a road trip to find Felicity's missing sister. And she's about to discover that unexpected turns have a peculiar way of landing her right where she needs to be...

Review:
Isn't it fun to think of what would happen if you actually got to meet a famous musician like Harry Styles or Shawn Mendes (or John Travolta or Michael Jackson in their prime for someone my age!)?  Are heartthrobs actually like regular people, or are they impossibly full of themselves?

That's the premise for Paper Hearts, by Ali Novak. This is a fun, sweet romance that was hard to put down.  I enjoyed the characters, situations, and the romance.  What was even better was that I didn't even realize (until halfway through reading it) that this is part two of a series!  I think it's a sign of good writing when you can jump in with any book in a series and not be confused.  There were hints about other characters that make me want to go to the first book and read more.

What I Liked:
Characters:
Felicity is a hard-working teen.  She makes good grades, works part-time to save up for college, and even does volunteering to look good on her college applications.  Since her dad left, and her sister ran away, her mom has had to struggle, so Felicity is very aware of how much things cost and is careful about money.  She definitely has her feet on the ground.

I really liked Felicity and appreciated that she was so hyper-aware about money.  This was so realistic!  I am always amazed by how teens in books don't seem concerned with how much things cost.  Many teens (as I was myself at that age) are very concerned with affording clothes, gas money, and spending money.  They can't ask their parents for these things.

This was a great contrast with Alec (the teen heartthrob) who never concerned himself with money matters.  While he could take out a card and buy whatever he wanted, he was still a very normal person.  I also liked that Alec was very reserved.  He was so used to people wanting to know him because of his fame that he didn't let his guard down easily.

Felicity also had a wonderful friend named Asha.  Asha was great because she was the superfan that Alec would try to avoid.  It was fun to see Asha freak out over things like seeing the inside of Alec's bathroom, and wanting to jump on social media to tell everyone about her good luck.

Situations:
I love books with road trip in them!  It was the perfect opportunity for Alec and Felicity to get to know each other better.  Plus she gets to meet his band mates, as well!  It was also fun to see Alec's playlists for Felicity at the end of the book!  There was also a different playlist that the author used as inspiration for the book.  I went ahead and (re) created Alec's playlist for Felicity on Spotify:

Romance:
I enjoyed the romance in the book (although it fits a pretty standard formula).  After the initial surprise of figuring out that Alec is a famous heartthrob, Felicity does get to know him and see him in less than picture perfect moments.    I liked that while Alec is used to girls falling all over him, Felicity must do some soul-searching about whether or not she can be with someone famous.  I also liked that his band mates were also pretty normal guys when it came to love (I loved that Oliver is clueless as to what to get his girlfriend for their anniversary!).

What I Was Mixed About:
Formulaic:
As much as I liked this book, I kept seeing many of the cliches that the Twitter account Brooding YA Hero parodies.

They include:

Masquerade ball ✔
Rich Dude, Poor Girl ✔
Bookish Girl ✔
Missing Parent ✔
Misunderstanding that could easily be cleared up ✔
Evil Dad ✔

It's saying a lot that I still found the book charming even with these silly tropes.

ARC Review: The Waking Land by Callie Bates

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32671619-the-waking-land?ac=1&from_search=true
Please note:  I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From Goodreads):
Lady Elanna Valtai is fiercely devoted to the King who raised her like a daughter. But when he dies under mysterious circumstances, Elanna is accused of his murder and must flee for her life.

Returning to the homeland of magical legends she has forsaken, Elanna is forced to reckon with her despised, estranged father, branded a traitor long ago. Feeling a strange, deep connection to the natural world, she also must face the truth about the forces she has always denied or disdained as superstition powers that suddenly stir within her.

But an all-too-human threat is drawing near, determined to exact vengeance. Now Elanna has no choice but to lead a rebellion against the kingdom to which she once gave her allegiance. Trapped between divided loyalties, she must summon the courage to confront a destiny that could tear her apart.

Review:
When I read a new fantasy book, one of the things I look for is how well the author does world-building.  It can be really tricky to give out he necessary information so that everything makes sense, yet keeps the ball rolling so the story doesn't stall.  I thought The Waking Land, by Callie Bates, did a wonderful job of introducing the reader to this world, while keeping a fast-paced story moving along.  This was a very enjoyable book with a love story that took some wonderfully unexpected turns.

What I Liked:
Characters:
Elanna is headstrong yet is very conflicted about who she should be loyal to.  Although king Antoine has treated her as a daughter, the fact remains that Elanna has been a hostage in Eren for fourteen years.  She is very resentful the fact that her father never tried to rescue her.

It's no surprise that as the story begins, Elanna is certain her allegiance lies with Antoine and his kingdom of Eren.  But she begins to question everything as she flees for her life, travelling to her father's lands in Caeris.  Was king Antoine really such a benevolent leader?  Did her parents actually forget about her?  I liked that Elanna had to take in lots of conflicting information and decide who to believe.

I also appreciated that she wasn't a fool for love.   She forged her own path with the men in her life, not letting custom dictate what she should do.

Most of the other women in the book were equally complex.  Her childhood friend, Victoire, also begins to question what she has been taught, and must decide how to respond to the reality that her father worked to hide money for the king.  Elanna's mother appeared to be uncaring and too consumed with her own pursuits to care about Elanna.  Yet, she actually finds ways to contribute to the cause for freedom.  Her actions are subtle and show how women often work behind the scenes to get things done.

World-Building:
I thought the author did a wonderful job of creating several different kingdoms.  Eren is supposed to be the superior, refined kingdom.  People in that capitol regard the people of Caeris as uneducated barbarians because they use magic and are in tune with the land.  The mountain region of Dalriada is an isolated part of Caeris that is the home of the wardens of the mountains.  They live more simply than the people of Eren, but are highly educated and have an intricate society.

I particularly enjoyed the complex structure of power in Caeris.  Power is shared equally between a King, the wardens of the mountain, and the Caveadear, the steward of the land.  However, there hasn't been a king, or a Caveadear, in nearly 200 years.  When Elanna shows that she has magical powers, her father determines that she is the Caveadear.   Is she really destined to be the steward of the land?  Or is her father just trying to use Elanna to grab power for himself?

Love Story:
At first I groaned when I saw that there would be a love triangle between Elanna, Finn, and Jahan.  Finn is set to be the new King of Caeris and there is pressure for Elanna and Finn to marry.  But she has already formed a connection with Jahan.  I think this plays out in a very smart way.  It wasn't forced and it showed that Elanna could maintain her independence.

There is a sex scene in this book.  While it does not go into "mommy porn" territory, the moment is frank so I would recommend this for older teens and up.

What I Was Mixed About:
Characters:
I thought the character of Princess Loyce was a bit two-dimensional.  She served the purpose of creating a situation where Elanna would need to escape to Caeris.  But we don't have any idea of why she is so vengeful toward Elanna.  I would have also liked to have seen how Loyce was coping with suddenly becoming queen.  This would have provided a great contrast with Elanna's struggle to understand her new role as the Caveadear.

This was an exciting book that was hard for me to put down.  As the land wakes up, so does Elanna.  She not only finds out the truth about her family, but finds her own way to live in the role life has given her.

I've added three more bookstores this week!  If you see my list and know of a bookstore that I have missed, please send me an email, or leave a comment below.

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area! I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest.  I do not list non-fiction books (There are simply too many events of those to list).  I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human). If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section. Thanks.

All  book graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.
