Bay Area Book Events #37

Due to the enormous size of this list, I only show events about four weeks in advance.  The master calendar will continue to show all the events I can find that are listed on each bookstore's site.

Bookstores in this list may include:
Barnes & Noble (various Bay Area Locations)
Book Passage (Corte Madera & San Francisco)
The Booksmith (San Francisco)
Books Inc. (various Bay Area Locations)
Pegasus Books (Berkeley & Oakland)
Hicklebee's Children's Books (San Jose)
A Great Good Place For Books (Oakland)
Kepler's Books (Menlo Park)
Diesel, A Bookstore (Oakland)

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area! I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest.  I do not list non-fiction books (There are simply too many events of those to list).  I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human). If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section. Thanks.

All  book graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.

Stacking The Shelves #71 & Sunday Post #34

I am combining two great blog hops:  Stacking The Shelves (a Saturday feature by Team Tynga's Reviews), and Sunday Post (a Sunday feature by the Caffeinated Book Reviewer).  Both of these features give people a chance to post about what books they received and also an opportunity to catch a glimpse of what others are excited about.  I really enjoy see everyone's version of these features! If you enjoy my blog, please consider following me via Bloglovin, Networked Blogs, GFC, or by email subscription.  If you leave a comment and tell me you are a new follower, I will follow you back! As always, all book cover images are linked to GoodReads so if you see a book you want to learn more about, just click away...

On The Blog Last Week:
After getting so many wonderful books the week before, I came to the realization that now I need to actually read them!  So, I have been playing catch up and reading as much as possible.  I'm really pleased that my Monday post, Bay Area Book Events, is getting over 100 hits each week!  I'm also to be interviewed by an independent publisher about this project for their newsletter.  I take a long time to gather as much information about book events in my area so people can have a one-stop place to find great literary events.

Monday:  Bay Area Book Events #36

Tuesday:   ARC Review: 10 Things I Can See From Here by Carrie Mac

Wednesday:  ARC Review:  The Marvelous Misadventures Of Ingrid Winter by J.S. Drangsholt

Thursday:  ARC Review:  The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

In "Real Life"
The weather had been getting warm and Spring feels just around the corner.  Due to some appliance issues, I have not been able to use my stove much this week, so we have been doing takeout a bunch (oh, boo hoo!).  But that was fixed today, so I can get cooking decent meals for my family next week.

That's it!  Have you read any of these new books?  Tell me what you think of them in the comments.

ARC Review: The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30095464-the-bone-witch?from_search=true
Please Note:  I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
Tea is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy makes her a bone witch, who are feared and ostracized in the kingdom. For theirs is a powerful, elemental magic that can reach beyond the boundaries of the living—and of the human.

Great power comes at a price, forcing Tea to leave her homeland to train under the guidance of an older, wiser bone witch. There, Tea puts all of her energy into becoming an asha, learning to control her elemental magic and those beasts who will submit by no other force. And Tea must be strong—stronger than she even believes possible. Because war is brewing in the eight kingdoms, war that will threaten the sovereignty of her homeland…and threaten the very survival of those she loves.

Review:
From the intriguing title, to the stunning book cover, I yearned to read this book from the moment I saw it on NetGalley.  Aside from the too-open ended finish, this book did not disappoint.

What I Liked:
Narrative Style:
The book alternates chapters between two first-person narratives.  First, a bard (we are never told his name) is compelled to travel to a desolate beach where an older Tea is preparing her revenge.  He asks her questions about her life, and witnesses her preparations for her revenge.

The other narrator is Tea reflecting on her training as an Asha and laying the groundwork for why she is seeking revenge.

I've never seen a book organized in this way.  It was unusual and compelling.

Setting:
A significant portion of the book happens in The Willows, a place much like that of the Geisha district in Kyoto, Japan.  I lived in Japan for several years, and I immediately understood the type of atmosphere the author was trying to convey.  The world of Asha (witches) is run much like Geisha.  The Asha train for years in more than spells.  They must be adept at singing, dancing, musical instruments, and conversation.  Then they set about entertaining important people at tea houses in The Willows.

Fashion:
I loved the descriptions of the clothing, and accessories of the Asha.  This may seem superficial, but the clothing of each Asha was an important part of their lives.  I made a Pinterest board to show what I think the fashions may have been like:

Characters:
I loved Tea, the main character of the book.  She was someone who was constantly being controlled by others.  She struggled to find the strength needed to break free of everyone else's expectations and be her own person.  I also liked that, although her Asha abilities were rare, she wasn't a Super character.  She was not great at everything she tried (particularly singing!).  I get very irritated when the main character is perfect, and Tea is far from that.

What I didn't Like:
Ending:
While I understand that this will be a trilogy,  I was frustrated by the huge cliffhanger ending!

via GIPHY

Yes, the main problem of the book was solved.  But there were so many unanswered questions, that I was extremely frustrated!  I had to take half a star away from my rating to reflect this.

Overall, this was an exciting beginning to a saga I will be following with great interest in the future.

ARC Review: The Marvelous Misadventures Of Ingrid Winter by J.S. Drangsholt

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32874445-the-marvelous-misadventures-of-ingrid-winter
Please Note:  I received an early copy of this book from Amazon's Kindle First Program.  This did not influence the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):

Ingrid Winter is desperately trying to hold it all together. A neurotic Norwegian mother of three small children and an overworked literature professor with an overactive imagination, Ingrid feels like her life’s always on the brink of chaos.
Her overzealous attempt to secure her dream house has strained her marriage. She’s repeatedly reprimanded for eye rolling in faculty meetings. Petulant PTA parents want to drag her into a war over teaching children to tie their shoes. And an alarmingly persistent salesman keeps warning her of the potential dangers of home intrusion.
Clearly she needs to get away. But Russia? Forced to join an academic mission to Saint Petersburg to promote international cooperation, Ingrid finds herself at a crossroads while drinking too much cough syrup. Will this trip push her into a Siberian sinkhole of existential dread or finally give her life some balance and direction?

Review:
I am really enjoying the Kindle First program (it's free with an Amazon Prime membership).  It has allowed me early access to several wonderful books.  This month's pick was The Marvelous Misadventures Of Ingrid Winter by J.S. Drangsholt, and it proves that women are just as stressed out in Norway as in the United States!

What I Liked:
Characters:
I don't know what it exactly says about me, but I really identified with the main character, Ingrid.  She is a busy mom of three kids who also has a demanding career at a university.  I could immediately see myself in Ingrid.  She is constantly concerned about getting everything done for her family, as well as in her job.  She feels she is slowly drowning and doesn't have any form of life -preserver.  Ingrid's troubles made me protective of her.  As I read the book, I grew more and more agitated at the injustice of her being blamed for other's mistakes.

Setting:
Part of the book takes place during a business trip to St. Petersburg, Russia.  The depictions of the bleak hotels, restaurants, and scenery are accurate, as I have been there myself (albeit many years ago).  I loved the misunderstandings, intrigue, and paranoia that all the characters experienced.  This was an very entertaining part of the book that balanced the more somber themes of the neglected wife and mother.

What I Was Mixed About:
Characters:
Ingrid's husband, Bjornar, is a good man, concerned about providing for his family, but totally apathetic to Ingrid's anxieties.  On the one hand, I could see why he was losing patience with Ingrid's antics, especially when she put their family in a financial bind.   But I also thought he was kind of a jerk!  One of the scenes that broke my heart was Ingrid being ill with pneumonia and Bjornar (and her own mother) neglecting her.  She feels terribly alone.  It made me want to scream at him!!!

Overall, this was a quick and fun read that made me realize that women everywhere face the same struggles.  We are much more alike than we are different, even continents away from each other.
