My Reading Update: November 21st, 2020

Welcome to my reading update!  I'm going to post this on a few blog hops such as Stacking The Shelves run by Team Tynga's Reviews, and Sunday Post, run by Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer and a new Facebook group I've joined called The Sunday Salon

Seeing what other are reading (and finding a novel that everyone's talking about) is the reason I love looking at blog hop posts.  Please feel free to drop me a line and tell me what you're reading.

What a week it has been!  It's been a roller-coaster ride here in California.  We were all set to open up school with a hybrid model, on Monday. By Tuesday, our county went to the most restrictive (Purple) tier, and our plans for opening up schools were shuttled.  On Thursday, Governor Newsom issued a curfew to try and stop the spread of COVID-19.  It's getting scary out there, so a curfew is fine with me.  Whatever we can do , I'm in.

This has been a week of anxiousness about the virus.  So, what's the cure for my worries?  Books, of course!

I've been reading a lot, and acquired some exciting books.

What I'm Reading Now:

What I Finished This Week:

New Books on My Shelf:

I'm most excited to read A Promised Land, by Barack Obama.  I received this audiobook for review from Penguin Random House.  But, it is over twenty-nine hours long! Oh my gosh, this is going to take a while!

As you begin your weekend, I wish for you rest, relaxation and health.

Stay Safe!

Art by my daughter!

This has been a much more relaxing week, since all the hoopla of the election.  In fact, I have mostly been catching up on my sleep, rather than doing much reading.  But, sometimes rest is just what is needed.  As the week winds down, I'm finally starting to get into two very interesting books.  And with the weather also finally getting colder, it's the perfect weekend to get lost in a book.

What I'm Reading:

What I Finished This Week:

New Books on my Shelf:

I'm lining up the books!  The Crepes of Wrath & A Room With A Roux are two cozy mysteries that look a bit cheesy, but also fun.  Plus there's a cat on the cover, so that sealed the deal.  I'm really looking forward to The Project, by Courtney Summers.  I loved her previous novel, Sadie.  It was full of suspense and heartbreaking realism.

Have a relaxing weekend!

ARC Review: The Haunting of Beatrix Greene by Rachel Hawkins, Ash Parsons, & Vicky Alvear Shecter

Please Note:  I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Beatrix Greene has made a name for herself in Victorian England as a reputable spiritual medium, but she’s a fraud: even she knows ghosts aren’t real. But when she’s offered a lucrative job by James Walker—a scientist notorious for discrediting pretenders like her—Beatrix takes the risk of a lifetime. If her séance at the infamously haunted Ashbury Manor fools him, she will finally have true financial freedom. If she fails, her secret will become her public shame.

But James has his own dark secrets, and he believes only a true medium can put them to rest. When Beatrix’s séance awakens her real gift—and with it, a vengeful spirit—James finds that the answers he seeks are more dangerous than he could have imagined. Together, with a group of supernatural sleuths, Beatrix and James race to settle the ghost’s unrest before it strikes— or else they might not make it out of the haunted manor alive.

New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins, along with Ash Parsons and Vicky Alvear Shecter, weaves darkness, death, and a hint of desire into this suspenseful mystery for fans of Sherlock Holmes and Crimson Peak.

Review:

Autumn is that time of year where a good, spooky story is welcome.  The Haunting of Beatrix Greene, by Rachel Hawkins, Ash Parsons, and Vicky Alvear Shecter, has a lot of fun horror elements:  ghosts, murder, and a mystery.   Even though I expected these things, the story got sidetracked by plot holes, and an improbable romance.  This was a fun horror story, but it could have been even better without the cheesy melodrama.

What I Liked:

Premise:

Women in Victorian England don't have many options to make a living, so Beatrix Greene makes the most of her theatrical background to work as a Medium.  But she knows she's a fraud.  When a wealthy skeptic offers her and her friend a large sum of money to conduct a seance, she can hardly say no.  She is all set to fake it, but then she makes contact with REAL spirits!  I loved this premise so much.  It gave the reader a sense of how difficult life was for women, but also turned the tables on the "Medium".  This was really fun.

Mystery:

The seance sets the stage for the central mystery of the book:  why did James's mother kill his brother, and then kill herself?  Why would she do it?  It became an infamous murder in the universe of the novel.  And why was his father so violent?  The house seems to be, itself, a character.  All is revealed when the seance begins and Beatrix becomes possessed by the spirit of James's mother.

Characters:

Besides Beatrix, who is a strong, independent woman (especially for Victorian England), there are several wonderful supporting characters, such as Amanda (an American photographer), and Harry, her friend and assistant.  I thought they brought some normalcy to a strange situation.  Amanda especially represents new opportunities for women, as another female with a career.  And Harry is just a wonderfully supportive friend.

What I Was Mixed About:

Plot Holes:

At the beginning of visiting Ashbury Manor, James invites Beatrix, Harry, Amanda, and a Dr. Doyle, for the seance.  Dr. Doyle is, of course, the name of the creator of Sherlock Holmes.  As tantalizing as this is, this goes nowhere.  He literally is gone in the next scene.

There is also a friend of James, a fellow aristocrat named Stanhope, who crashes the gathering.  He later becomes important in the story, but it's never explained how he knows so much information about Ashbury Manor, and the family curse.

Romance:

The time is set in Victorian England.  Yet, Beatrix and James get very familiar, very quickly.  I know that Beatrix is supposed to be more modern and independent, but this would have been scandalous in those times.  Given the difficultly Beatrix has supporting herself, would she have risked being branded a loose woman?  Even as a Medium, no one would have wanted to associate with a wanton woman.  And I just didn't think the romance was believable.

My Reading Update: October 24th, 2020

Welcome to my reading update!  I'm going to post this on a few blog hops such as Stacking The Shelves run by Team Tynga's Reviews, and Sunday Post, run by Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer and a new Facebook group I've joined called The Sunday Salon

Seeing what other are reading (and finding a novel that everyone's talking about) is the reason I love looking at blog hop posts.  Please feel free to drop me a line and tell me what you're reading.

I've been trying to do more posts on my blog, so I'm posting a quick reading update for this week,  Books have been such a comfort these past few months.  Television is too filled up with political ads (the same three commercials for propositions in California are on repeat every few minutes), and most social media has been quite toxic.  So books are my happy place.  But aren't they always?

What I'm Reading Now:

I hope to be finished with Love Your Life by Sunday so I can write the darn review before its release on Tuesday!  So far, it's pretty light and fun.  I'm listening to The Vanishing Half, so I may finish it this weekend as well.

What I Finished This Week:

A Witch In Time was our book club selection and it was wonderful.  We had a lively discussion about it on Tuesday.

New Books On My Shelves:

There are a lot of wonderful books here.  But I am most excited about Over The Woodward Wall by A. Deborah Baker (a.k.a Seanan McGuire).  I absolutely love her writing.  It is so full of contrasts, usually with hopeful young people facing a dark world.  I am thrilled to buy this book and support this author.

That's it for this week.  Have a fun, pumpkin-filled run up to Halloween!

ARC Review: Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3176362967
Please Note:  I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Summer love...gone so fast.

Ollie and Will were meant to be a summer fling—casual, fun, and done. But when Ollie’s aunt's health takes a turn for the worse and his family decides to stay in North Carolina to take care of her, Ollie lets himself hope this fling can grow to something more. Dreams that are crushed when he sees Will at a school party and finds that the sweet and affectionate (and comfortably queer) guy he knew from summer isn’t the same one attending Collinswood High.

Will is more than a little shocked to see Ollie the evening of that first day of school. While his summer was spent being very much himself, back at school he’s simply known as one of the varsity basketball guys. Now Will is faced with the biggest challenge of his life: follow his heart and risk his friendships, or stay firmly in the closet and lose what he loves most.

Review:
Grease is a classic movie of summer love.  I'm old enough to remember when it came out in theaters.  It was a magical summer with warm nights, friends hanging out, and the potential for romance just around the corner.  I found that same magic in Only Mostly Devastated, by Sophie Gonzales.  With a charming cast of characters, and a strong story, this was a fantiastic book.

What I Liked:

Characters:
Ollie is a smart, sweet guy who is going through a difficult family situation (his aunt has cancer).  I loved that he stayed kind, even in the face of rude, homophobic behavior from his classmates.  He even reaches out to someone who is clearly scared to "come out" and listens attentively.  He never gives ultimatums, but does stand up for himself.

I also loved the three female friends of Ollie (The Rose Gold girls!).  Lara, Juliette, and Niamh each have distinctive story arcs, and sometimes don't get along.  But they are lifelong friends, and are definitely there for each other.  I loved that they accepted Ollie into their group and rallied around him.

Themes:
This is a story with so many positive messages.  The author used the plot device of the dying aunt to show how worrying over what people think is no way to live.  It's a waste of time and energy.  Aunt Linda reminds the characters to live fully with whatever time you've got.

I appreciated that not all the characters were heading for college (usually the default in YA books).
As with any coming-of-age book, all the characters must make decisions about their future that are exciting, but scary.  Do you have to go to college?  How can you balance what you want with what your family expects of you?    There are many paths to success, and this book shows all the different paths one could take.

Story:
The story basically follows the plot of Grease, but with a boy meets boy twist.  I loved it!!!  It was so fun to see how the author found such relevance to the issues facing teens today.  I especially loved how the Rizzo story arc was updated.

What I Was Mixed About:

Ollie's Parents:
While I totally understood where they were coming from (I myself have taken care of a relative when they had cancer), I thought they were pretty thoughtless about Ollie.  Moving in your senior year of high school is a big deal for a teen.  They look forward to reaching all those milestones (college choices, Prom, graduation) with the kids they grew up with.  But Ollie's parents never acknowledged that.

Also, let's be honest.  Being gay in the San Francisco Bay Area is far different than being gay in America's South.  They should have known that Ollie would have a challenging time with other students.  I would have set my kid up to join a LGBTQ teen center to meet other gay teens.  Or I would have, at least, checked in with my kid to make sure there weren't any problems.  I wish the author would have done something to show that there were other adults and resources that were looking out for teens like Ollie.

Cancer:
I thought the book dealt honestly about cancer and end of life issues.  But I would caution anyone who has been thought this experience, to read it only if you think it won't trigger you.  I know I cried and cried at certain scenes because it was so true to life.  Ultimately, it was very affirming, but be prepared for all your emotions to come bubbling up to the surface with this book.

ARC Review: Ten Days Gone by Beverly Long

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45422558-ten-days-gone?from_search=true&qid=C9lJ4hQfQa&rank=1

Please Note:  I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
They know exactly when he'll strike... They just have to find him first. In all their years working for the Baywood police department, detectives A.L. McKittridge and Rena Morgan have never seen anything like it. Four women dead in forty days, each killed ten days apart. With nothing connecting the victims and very little evidence, the clock is already counting down to when the next body drops. A.L. and Rena will have to act fast if they're going to find the killer's next victim before he does. But identifying the killer's next likely target is only half the battle. With pressure pushing in from all sides, a promising breakthrough leads the detectives to Tess Lyons, a woman whose past trauma has left her too damaged to appreciate the danger she's in. Unwilling to let another woman die, A.L. and Rena will put everything on the line to keep Tess safe and end the killer's deadly spree once and for all--before time runs out again.

Review:
Ten Day Gone, by Beverly Long, is a highly entertaining mystery/thriller.  It has a great, small town setting filled with many interesting characters.  The two main characters are complex which makes me want to get to know them more.  And the plot is fast-paced, with plenty of twists and turns.

What I Liked:
Setting:
The setting, a small town in Wisconsin, is the perfect backdrop for the many characters that the author has in the story.  Everybody knows everyone (and everything) in this community.  And yet, there are also many secrets that people keep hidden.  Many of those secrets are revealed in the novel, which makes the people highly interesting.

I also liked that the author highlighted people with lots of family connections.  Often characters are shown in a vacuum, never showing family obligations or gatherings.  I loved that both of the main characters had complicated lives outside of their jobs.

Characters:
The two main characters, A.L. McKittridge and Rena Morgan, are police detective partners.  Their relationship is purely professional, yet they do occasionally talk with each other about their private lives.  I liked the realistic presentation of these two people.  They both have strengths and challenges.  But they always respect each other.

The supporting characters are also very realistic and interesting.  From the various suspects reluctance to speak to the police, to the detectives respective families, they all were characters I wanted to know about.

Plot:
The plot centers around a serial killer who is killing women every 10 days.  I liked learning how the detectives could deduce who the possible suspects were and following them along as they close in on the killer.

As the novel progresses, McKittridge and Morgan figure out who the next victim could be.  I loved learning who this person was and how they dealt with learning they were a target.

The resolution of the story was well executed with lots of roadblocks to make the outcome uncertain.  This kept me reading and wanting know who the killer was and if they could stop them!

This is the first book in a new series by the author, Beverly Long.  I enjoyed this book and really look forward to seeing the characters again in the next novel in the series.

Take Note:  There is an explicit sex scene in this book.  If you are looking for a "clean" novel, you may not want to read this.

Stacking The Shelves & Sunday Post #7

I am combining two great weekly blog hops:  Stacking The Shelves by Team Tynga's Reviews, and Sunday Post by Caffeinated Reviewer.  I hope to read as many of the blogs from these two hops as possible because I love to see what everyone is reading!

If you enjoy my blog, please consider following me at Bloglovin, Goodreads, or Twitter.  Let me know you're a new follower so I can follow you back!

Happenings:
What a busy, fun week at work!  Our team (now known as The Fabulous Five) put on the Valentine's Day party and it was super fun.

We put on an English High Tea, complete with scones and clotted cream!  I made chocolate covered strawberries, created a playlist, and put on one of the games.

For The game, I chose a Valentine's edition of Name That Tune.  I was pleasantly surprised by how everyone participated and were rather competitive!

Here's my playlist, if you want to check it out:

Reading:
With all the preparation for our party, I didn't get much reading done.  I did finish an ARC, that was very entertaining called Ten Days Gone, by Beverly Long.

I'm starting to really enjoy crime novels!  I'll have a review up sometime this weekend.

New Books:
This was a great week for new books, particularly ARC approvals:

I got a surprising amount of reading done this week, finishing three books.

I think I liked A Long Petal of The Sea, by Isabel Allende the most.  It was such an epic story of refugees making a new life for themselves in South America in the 1940's.  I loved the characters, and learning more about historical events I knew little of, such as the Spanish Civil War.

This is one of my most anticipated books of 2020!  The audiobooks of this series have been incredible due to the stellar performance of the narrator, January LaVoy.  If you've been following this series, read the audiobook versions.  They are a special treat.

Oh boy!  Have I bitten off more than I can chew???

What are some of your most anticipated books for 2020?  Let me know in the comments.
