SF Bay Area Book Events #3

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area!  I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest.  I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human).  If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section.  Thanks.

All graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.

If you want to see this in a calendar, please go to the Events page on my blog: SF Bay Area Events

Stacking The Shelves #38 & Sunday Post #1

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly feature hosted by Team Tynga's Reviews.  Each week, nearly 100 bloggers share what they got in their book hauls!  It is really fun to blog hop and see all the goodies!

This week, I will also be linking up with the Sunday Post weekly feature hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  I've seen a lot of fellow bloggers link up with this meme, so I hope to gain a wider audience by joining.

If you like what you see, please follow me.  Just let me know which method you used in the comments, and I will follow you back!

Personal Stuff:

I had a quick visit down in Santa Barbara (California) over the Independence Day holiday.  I got to see my husband's family and watch the fireworks on the Rivera (a swanky part of town overlooking the city).  They put on a great show.  I am so grateful for my Mother-in-law for putting us up and making wonderful meals throughout our stay.  She is amazing!

The next day,  I went with my daughter to Carpenteria to see my lovely Aunt and her friends.  This woman is 88 years old, and has the most wonderful group of friends.  Around this very small town they are called Los Tres Mosqueteros! They go everywhere together, and are always laughing.  We had a great visit at one of their homes.

Soon the trip was over and we were back to our regular lives.  On our way home (a six hour car ride), my husband got a call from work asking him to come to the office the next day.  I was quite mad as this is his vacation week.  But he took it in stride and told them yes.  This man has can never get a chance to relax!  I need to fix that...

On My Blog:

Sat. July 2nd - Stacking The Shelves #37

Mon. July 4th - SF Bay Area Book Events #2

Tues. July 5th - ARC Review:  Learning To Swear In America

Wed. July 6th -  Book Review: Unicorn Tracks

I wrote four posts last week, featuring my new resource for people living in the Bay Area:  San Francisco Bay Area Book Events.  Each week, I am going to list all the book events around the area that I think people will be interested in.  There is actually a lot of events, but going through all the various bookstore websites has been a pain.  I hope by having them all in one place, people who live in this area will have a resource to check out book events.  I plan to update this list weekly.

All book covers are linked with GoodReads, so if your interested, just click away...

This has been a fun week of reading for me!  All three of these books were fabulous.  I can't believe it took me this long to dive in to the Air Awakens series!  With a new book coming out on Tuesday, I need to hurry up and keep reading this saga!  Ditto with Fangirl.  What a sweet and wonderful story.  Valley of the Moon was a delight.  I will be reviewing it in the next few weeks.

Well, you know I just need to read on, right?  Both of these are sequels to the books I read last week.  I just hope I can read them soon.  I hate to have large gaps in reading books from a series (mostly because I am very forgetful).

Book Review: Unicorn Tracks by Julia Ember

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29971080-unicorn-tracks?ac=1&from_search=true

Please Note:  I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.  This does not influence the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
When a vicious assault compels sixteen-year-old Mnemba to leave her village, she joins her cousin Tumelo as a tracker in his booming safari business. It doesn’t take her long to become one of the best safari guides in Nazwimbe. Her work allows her to escape into a new world of wondrous creatures, and to avoid thinking about what happened at home.

When Mr. Harving arrives with his daughter Kara to research unicorns, Tumelo assigns Mnemba to them as a guide. The attraction between Mnemba and Kara is almost instant, but Kara is engaged to be married when she returns home. Venturing into the savanna alone, they uncover a plot by a gang of poachers to enslave the unicorns, harnessing their supernatural strength to build a railway. They must save the creatures Kara loves while struggling not to succumb to forbidden love themselves.

Review:
I have followed Julia Ember on Twitter for a while now.  She has great things to say, and so I was delighted when she contacted me and asked if I would read her book, Unicorn Tracks.  The story has many elements I haven't seen often in YA: The setting (Africa), culture clashes, a sweet lesbian romance, and...Unicorns!!!

via GIPHY

Color me interested.  I found this book to be a fun mix of all of these components and a thoroughly enjoyable book.

Although the setting is in Africa, it is definitely in an alternate universe where mythical creatures roam the Savannah.  We find our main character, Mnemba, working as a safari guide where tourists are as likely to see a mermaid, a griffin, or a phoenix as they are to see a lion.  One of the rarest creatures to observe is the unicorn.  When a father and daughter team of researchers hire Mnemba to track the unicorns, it leads to a terrible discovery.  I thought using the African setting and altering it to include fantasy creatures was a nice twist.

There is an abundance of situations where the clash between black Africans and white tourists are shown.  Most of the customers project a smug superiority to their hosts.  Although Mr. Harving and his daughter, Kara, show some cultural sensitivity, they still have many misconceptions to overcome.  I think this is probably similar to the complicated relationships tourists have with locals in any developing country.  I thought this was a very astute observation on the part of the author.

The romance between Mnemba and Kara was very sweet and showed how hard it must be to let down your guard and feel safe.  These relationships are often condemned, particularly in Africa.  Along with the expectations of their families, they faced a challenging future together.  But the book had me rooting for these two to prevail.

You know when you watch a horror movie and one of the characters says, "I'll just go check out that noise outside", and you want to scream, "Stop!"

via GIPHY

There were times in the story where I was doing just that.  I think the Mnemba and Kara took some incredible risks that were a bit over the top.  This is my only complaint about this book.   Most of these were instigated by Kara.  Perhaps in a sequel, we could see if Kara had some issues that might explain her reckless behavior.

Overall, this was such an enjoyable book.  I hope many people will read this and go on their own fantasy safari.

ARC Review: Learning To Swear In America

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23018259-learning-to-swear-in-america?from_search=true&search_version=service

Please Note:  I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This does not affect my opinions in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):

An asteroid is hurtling toward Earth. A big, bad one. Yuri, a physicist prodigy from Russia, has been called to NASA as they calculate a plan to avoid disaster. He knows how to stop the asteroid: his research in antimatter will probably win him a Nobel prize--if there's ever another Nobel prize awarded. But Yuri's 17, and having a hard time making older, stodgy physicists listen to him. Then he meets Dovie, who lives like a normal teenager, oblivious to the impending doom. Being with her, on the adventures she plans when he's not at NASA, Yuri catches a glimpse of what it means to save the world and save a life worth living.

Review:

I've been thinking a lot, lately, about what it takes for a book to reach "five stars" with me.  Is it the story or the characters, or something else?  For me, a book must have a wonderful story and memorable characters but it must also pull me in to the book and get me emotionally involved.  Learning To Swear In America, by Katie Kennedy, did just that!  I loved it.

Story:

A boy genius from Russia is called in to work with a team of older scientists to try and find a way to stop a meteor from crashing in to Southern California.    I loved how Yuri (the main character) had trouble with his teammates.  This 17 year-old has to work with men in their 60's.  No one is taking him seriously.  I mean, he's just a kid, right?  But he has gotten where he is, not just by brains, but by working hard.  This means he has never been able to act like a teenager.  By chance, Yuri meets up with a teen named Dovie, who he finds an instant connection with.  Dovie, along with her brother Lennon, make it their goal to show Yuri how to be a teen.  The results are sweet and hilarious.  I felt for this young person who didn't quite fit into either world.

Characters:

As I was reading this book, I couldn't help but think of who would be a good choice for a movie version.  Sadly, the one person who I think would have been so good in this role passed away last week due to a freak accident.

Anton Yelchin would have been so perfect as Yuri.
So as I read this book, I naturally pictured Anton in my head.  I'm so sad that he passed (and in such a needless way).  It appears his car rolled backwards and pinned him to his mailbox.  He was a rising star...

I loved the characters of Yuri (trying desperately to fit in with his colleagues and other teens), Dovie (just trying to get through high school), and Lennon (trying to get others to see beyond his wheelchair).  All three has so much to contribute to the world, but were also in need of each other.

Emotional Involvement:

As I said earlier, in order for me to award a book  5 stars, I need to get emotionally attached as I read it.  This book worked it's charm on me.  I was rooting for Yuri to succeed, for Dovie to understand that life gets better after high school, and for Lennon to overcome his depression.

With all three characters, the common thread was that each wanted to control their own destiny.  I think that problem is shared among many teens.  Older adults scoff at their issues, underestimating, (and undervaluing) what they are capable of.  We expect 17 year-olds to make major life decisions such as going to college, but don't trust that they have common sense.  It's a huge moment in a person's life when they stop listening to their parents, and start owning their decisions.

I hope many people will find this book and come to appreciate what any person can do.  This book is delightful, funny, and suspenseful.  It's the kind of book you can immerse yourself in, and feel contented when it ends.

SF Bay Area Book Events #2

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area!  I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest.  I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human).  If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section.  Thanks.

All graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.

Stacking The Shelves #37

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly feature hosted by Team Tynga's Reviews.  Each week, nearly 100 blogs from around the world share what books they got and other fun facts about their week. It is so much fun to blog hop and see what everyone is talking about.  Go to their site for a list of all the participating blogs.

If you like what you see, please follow me.  Just put down the method you followed with in the comments, and I will follow you back!  Thanks.

This week finally felt like a vacation!  While I am getting a lot done organizing and cleaning, I have also had time to (gasp!) watch some television, exercise, and (of course) read.  I got to read some really fun books this week, and made a small dent in my COYER (Clean Out Your E-Reader) Challenge.

Read This Week:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25231892-unicorn-trackshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23018259-learning-to-swear-in-americahttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26114463-nevernight

While I enjoyed all three of these books, my favorite of the week has got to be Nevernight, by Jay Kristoff.  Such a dark book with wicked humor.  I also found it quite disturbing.  I will explain it when I review it.  But, needless to say, this book is strictly for older teens and adults.

Currently Reading:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23127048-air-awakens?ac=1&from_search=truehttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25986723-the-root

How did I not start reading the Air Awakens series sooner?  I am LOVING IT!  The Root is a fun fantasy book, as well.

Update on my COYER (Clean Out Your E-Reader) Challenge:

I had 22 books on my COYER list, and over the past two weeks, I have been able to read two and am well on my way to finishing up a third today.  For me, this is progress...  Here is a link to my original post so you can see what books I need to read.

New From NetGalley:

I have been putting together a list of Author Events in the San Francisco Bay Area and noticed this author is coming out here in September.  The book looks really fun with elements of Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children in it.  Looks like a fun read!

Bought from Amazon:

Patrick Ness is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.  A Monster Calls, and The Rest Of Us Just Live Here were so wonderful.  So when I saw this listed in a kindle deal for $2.99, I jumped at getting it.

What new books did you get this week?  Which ones are you jumping to the head of the line?  Let me know in the comments.
