Stacking The Shelves #99 & Sunday Post #62

I am combining two great blog hops:  Stacking The Shelves (a Saturday feature by Team Tynga's Reviews), and Sunday Post (a Sunday feature by the Caffeinated Book Reviewer).  Both of these features give people a chance to post about what books they received and also an opportunity to catch a glimpse of what others are excited about.  I really enjoy see everyone's version of these features! If you enjoy my blog, please consider following me via Bloglovin, Networked Blogs, GFC, or by email subscription.  If you leave a comment and tell me you are a new follower, I will follow you back!

I have begun to participate in the Amazon affiliate program, so if you click on any of the book covers it will take you to Amazon if you want to buy the book.  I will be getting a small fee for each purchase.

On The Blog:

Monday:  Bay Area Book Events #65

Tuesday:  ARC Review:  One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake

Thursday:  ARC Review:  The Witch's Kiss by Katharine Corr & Elizabeth Corr

Yes!  I have finally caught up with the ARCs that I have, and feel comfortable enough to read books that are just for fun!  Which is a really good thing because a bunch of books that I placed on hold at the library just came in.  I have been waiting months for the Kristin Hannah book!  I am also excited for all the new audio books from Random House (Thank you again, Caffeinated Book Reviewer for connecting me!).

In Real Life:
It's been kind of a hard week at work, as we are short-handed.  But, the good news is that, with all that running around, I am nearing 10,000 steps a day!  I also tried to walk around the new track before school.  I walked 1.5 miles on Wednesday, but then my knee was irritated.  I'm feeling a little better today, so I may go to the gym.  It's a daily struggle between pain and exercise.  Usually pain wins out, but I am persisting.

So many wonderful titles!!!  When I read the description for I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, I immediately identified with the character.  I am really hoping it's wonderful!

ARC Review: The Witch's Kiss by Katharine Corr & Elizabeth Corr

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BB1VGVI/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=onderherose-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01BB1VGVI&linkId=e46421db43628aee770c44843beb414d
Please Note:  I received an advance reader's copy of this book from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions of my review in any way.  Also, I have linked the book cover to Amazon.  If you buy the book through this link, I will get a small fee.

Synopsis (From Goodreads):
Sixteeen-year-old Meredith is fed-up with her feuding family and feeling invisible at school – not to mention the witch magic that shoots out of her fingernails when she’s stressed. Then sweet, sensitive Jack comes into her life and she falls for him hard. The only problem is that he is periodically possessed by a destructive centuries-old curse. Meredith has lost her heart, but will she also lose her life? Or in true fairytale tradition, can true love’s kiss save the day?

Review:
I read The Witch's Kiss, by Katharine Corr & Elizabeth Corr very quickly.  It was fast-paced and fun.  But I needed some time before I wrote this review.  I needed to sort out my feelings for this book.  For the most part, I loved it.  But there were a few worn tropes that dampened my enthusiasm for this novel.

What I Liked:
Characters:
I enjoyed Merry and Leo.  This sister and brother duo were a great pair.  While Merry did have many friends, no one knew her quite as well as her own brother, Leo.   He accepts her as no one else can.  Merry is not a perfect teen.  She makes mistakes when she finds out she can use magic.  Study for a test?  Who needs that when you can create a spell to be able to instantly memorize school work!  I think her use of magic to get around the drudgery of school is something most teens would try.

Leo was also a wonderful character.  A gay teen, trying to figure out how to live in a small town, Leo isn't sure how to behave with this friends anymore.  If he came out, would he be accepted?  I know in the United States, the answer would depend on what part of the country he lived in.  I don't know how being gay is accepted in the U.K., so I was very interested in Leo's story.

I also loved how strong and protective Leo was of his sister, while still showing her respect.  He was never condescending to Merry, but also could point out when she was in over her head.

Story:
I loved that the main characters were a sister and her brother, and that the brother was NOT regulated to the role of side-kick!  As the story was written from Meredith's point of view, it would have been an easy thing to just focus on her story.  But the book also delves in to Leo's story of being gay in a small English town.  This shows how important Leo is to Merry (Meredith's nickname).  They have such a wonderful bond as siblings.

This was also an anti-fairy tale, that did not go the easy route with a feel good ending.  This ending was better because there was a kind of sacrifice.  I think in these type of stories, a price needs to be paid.  Otherwise, there is not enough at stake to make the reader care.

What I Was Mixed About:
Falling For The Bad Boy:
I groaned a bit when it became apparent that Merry was going to fall in love with Jack.  Yes, this does make her more invested in his story.  But I thought this was completely unnecessary.  Perhaps Leo and Jack could have fallen in love?  That would have been interesting, indeed.

What I Did Not Like:
"Missing Parent" Syndrome:
Can we please stop using this trope!  This is my all-time pet peeve in YA books.  The parent is gone, leaving the teen characters free reign to do whatever they want.  Now, in this story the parent does show up, but only to add a barrier at a crucial point in the story.  Once the dramatic moment has passed, the parent is quickly out of the picture, again.

ARC Review: One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062385461/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=onderherose-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=0062385461&linkId=826f97c8d5d0f6baf496243dea98d7c4

Synopsis (From Goodreads):
The battle for the Crown has begun, but which of the three sisters will prevail?

With the unforgettable events of the Quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, must figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favor without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, once thought to be the strongest sister of all and the certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks like never before—ones that put those around her in danger she can’t seem to prevent.

In this enthralling sequel to Kendare Blake’s New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns, Fennbirn’s deadliest queens must face the one thing standing in their way of the crown: each other.

Review:
Since I was such an enthusiastic fan of Three Dark Crowns, by Kendare Blake, I was thrilled to be able to read the next installment of the series, One Dark Throne.  I had high expectations for this book, and they were exceeded!

What I Liked:
Characters:
The three queens, Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Katharine, each are complex personalities.  As I read, I found myself switching back and forth between who I wanted to survive.  There is no one queen who is morally superior to the others.  That is not a bad thing.  It just shows how most people are not completely good, or evil.  Katharine, in particular, at first seems absolutely awful.  But as it is revealed that something is controlling her, I couldn't hate her completely.

The supporters of each queen are equally interesting characters.  Joseph and Jules situation is challenging, as Jules tries to forgive Joseph for  his betrayal in book one.  But their staunch loyalty to Arsinoe made me feel that she could become a very successful leader for the island.  Luca is the chief priestess who supports Mirabella.  While she is a mother-figure to Mirabella, she is also a shrewd politician.  Those competing interests are tested as deals are made behind the queens back to consolidate power.  And Katharine's supporters, Natalia and Pietyr, are at turns protective, and scheming to ensure their own interests.

Story:
The story itself is complex, as the reader follows three different story lines.  Katharine returns from the brink of death a very changed person.  She seems fearless, and ruthless.  But why has she changed?  Given her erratic behavior, would she be able to rule effectively?  Mirabella and Arsinoe both have qualms about killing their sisters in order to become the one queen.

I think the big takeaway from this book is seeing how all three queens are being manipulated by the ruling families and institutions of the island.  Who really benefits from this circus of death?  Isn't this all a distraction for the masses to focus on rather than the fact that a handful of people are profiting from the island's riches?  Can there be a better way to rule the island?

What I was Mixed About:
Katharine:
I had very mixed feelings about Katharine.  She is extremely cruel and a psychopath, taking pleasure in killing.  If the author hadn't explained the true motivation for her sudden personality change, I would have wanted to throw the book down.  But I do think she is redeemed (slightly), by some revelations at the end of the book.

What I Didn't Like:
Lack of a Recap:
This is definitely a series that one must start at the beginning to understand the action.  I would even go so far as to say that you should re-read the first book or you will find yourself thumbing through Three Dark Crowns to quickly recap who is who.  At times I was lost.

Bay Area Book Events #65

Due to the enormous size of this list, I only show events about four weeks in advance.  There is also a master calendar that has all listings.

Bookstores in this list may include:
A Great Good Place For Books (Oakland)
Barnes & Noble (various Bay Area Locations)
Books Inc. (various Bay Area Locations)
Book Passage (Corte Madera & San Francisco)
Borderlands Books (San Francisco)
Copperfield's Books (Various Locations)
East Bay Booksellers (Oakland)
Green Apple Books (San Francisco)
Hicklebee's Children's Books (San Jose)
Kepler's Books (Menlo Park)
Mrs. Dalloway's (Berkeley)
Orinda Books (Orinda)
Pegasus Books (Berkeley & Oakland)
Point Reyes Bookstore (Point Reyes)
Rakestraw Books (Danville)
The Booksmith (San Francisco)
Town Center Books (Pleasanton)

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area! I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest.  I do not list non-fiction books (There are simply too many events of those to list).  I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human). If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section. Thanks.

All  book graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.
