ARC Review: She Made Me Laugh by Richard Cohen

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27274406-she-made-me-laugh?from_search=true

Please Note:  I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This does not affect the opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
Nora Ephron, one of the most famous writers, film makers, and personalities of her time is captured by her long-time and dear friend in a hilarious, blunt, raucous, and poignant recollection of their decades-long friendship.

Nora Ephron (1941–2012) was a phenomenal personality, journalist, essayist, novelist, playwright, Oscar-nominated screenwriter, and movie director (Sleepless in Seattle; You’ve Got Mail; When Harry Met Sally; Heartburn; Julie & Julia). She wrote a slew of bestsellers (I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman; I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections; Scribble, Scribble: Notes on the Media; Crazy Salad: Some Things About Women). She was celebrated by Hollywood, embraced by literary New York, and adored by legions of fans throughout the world.

Award-winning journalist Richard Cohen, wrote this about his “third-person memoir”: “I call this book a third-person memoir. It is about my closest friend, Nora Ephron, and the lives we lived together and how her life got to be bigger until, finally, she wrote her last work, the play, Lucky Guy, about a newspaper columnist dying of cancer while she herself was dying of cancer. I have interviewed many of her other friends—Mike Nichols, Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Arianna Huffington—but the book is not a name-dropping star turn, but an attempt to capture a remarkable woman who meant so much to so many other women.”

Review:
As far as writers go, few have been as influential as Nora Ephron.  She wrote one of the most romantic movies of the 1980's, Sleepless In Seattle, and also one of the most caustic, Heartburn.  Both are compelling classics for different reason.  Writer Richard Cohen was a close friend of Nora Ephron (it just doesn't seem right to say simply, Nora), and his book shows how brilliant and groundbreaking her writing was.  This is a thoughtful and well-written book.  Yet, this portrayal also makes Ms. Ephron seem rather elitist, a stereotype of a "New York Intellectual".

What I liked:
There are many interesting stories and anecdotes about what a force of nature she was.  Apparently, her dinner parties were legendary.  I will say that the author did not shy away from painting Ms. Ephron in a negative light, at times.  She would preside over a dinner table, dictating what the topic of conversation would be.  Guests were expected to perform, and heaven help them if they didn't deliver an entertaining repartee (they would not be invited back and sometimes were shunned from Ms. Ephron's social circle).

Most of the time, Ms. Ephron seems totally in control.  It is one of the major questions of this book as to why she kept her terminal cancer a secret from even her closest friends.  Was it vanity?  Did she think it would make her appear weak?  Maybe she couldn't stand pity.  We readers will never know, as the author never quite revealed an answer.  But I think that to even her closest friends, Nora Ephron remained a mystery.

What I didn't like:
As written, Nora Ephron comes off as a colossal snob.  Although, she was friends with many people who were not famous, it seems like most people were judged by their fame or notoriety.  This lady enjoyed name dropping.  Of course, she did know many famous people and was married to one of the most famous journalists in American history, Carl Bernstein.  But all the adoration of the well-known rubbed me the wrong way.

I would have been more interested to read about what it was like to be one of the only women directors in the 80's.  Did she feel like she had to be tougher and shine brighter to gain legitimacy?  Was she ever slighted by producers?  Again, this book makes it seem that she simple commanded respect, and it was given.  I find that hard to believe.

If you enjoy the writings and works of Nora Ephron, I actually would recommend this book.  But, unless you are a super fan, you may find this book to be a bit self-congratulatory.

ARC Review: Super Sushi Ramen Express by Michael Booth

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29102648-super-sushi-ramen-express?ac=1&from_search=true

Please Note:  I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This does not affect the opinions in my  review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
Food and travel writer Michael Booth takes the culinary pulse of contemporary Japan, learning fascinating tips and recipes that few westerners have been privy to before. Accompanied by two fussy eaters under the age of six, he and his wife travel the length of the country, from bear-infested, beer-loving Hokkaido to snake-infested, seaweed-loving Okinawa. Along the way, they dine with—and score a surprising victory over—sumo wrestlers, pamper the world’s most expensive cows with massage and beer, share a seaside lunch with free-diving female abalone hunters, and meet the greatest chefs working in Japan today. Less happily, they witness a mass fugu slaughter, are traumatized by an encounter with giant crabs, and attempt a calamitous cooking demonstration for the lunching ladies of Kyoto.

Review:
When I first saw the description of this book, I got really excited.  I lived in Japan for over three years, and I was eager to read about how another foreigner found the food of Japan (which is about so much more than sushi).   I also wanted to read about Michael Booth's experience traveling with kids, as we have taken our four kids to Japan a few years ago.  Although I would say I am very well versed in my knowledge of Japanese cuisine, I learned even more from this book.  I found this book to be delightful but perhaps it is for a niche market.

What I liked:
This book is written by a journalist and it shows in his attention to detail.  Michael Booth had contacts with artisanal producers of saki, tofu, and soy sauce.  He was able to sort out the history of each product, how each was made, and their futures (or possibly their demises).  As a "foodie", I loved these details.

Much of the book ponders the question of whether or not authentic Japanese cuisine is vanishing.  Booth talks with respected chefs, food critics, and Japanese gourmands.  Most would say that they have seen a rapid decline in the quality of the fundamentals of Japanese cooking, particularly in how chefs make dashi.  Dashi is the basis of much of Japanese food from miso soup onward.

The author also seemed very keen on finding out if the traditional Japanese diet contributed to the nation's high life expectancy.  He does a great job of sorting out myths from facts.

What I didn't like:
As much as I am raving about the attention to detail that went into this book, I feel it is also the book's downfall.  Unless you are like me (a person heavily invested in the topic already), I doubt that the average reader will be enthralled by chapter upon chapter describing the minutia of Japanese cuisine.

I was also expecting more about the misadventures of traveling with young children.  There are a few anecdotes about his kids being picky eaters, but that's about it.  I know from my own experiences, kids can add an original perspective to an already strange situation.

With most of the emphasis on Japanese high cuisine, I think what was missing was a view of how the average Japanese actually eats.  For me, I was fascinated by how my Japanese friends approached meals.  I made friends with several Japanese women over my stay in Japan.  I would get cooking lessons from my new friends, learning how to make tonkatsu and my favorite food: okinomiyaki!  Each region (and each home cook) has their unique way of making the dish.  I loved learning about new ingredients, and techniques from my friends.  We bonded over our shared love of cooking.

I think if the author had found a better way to connect with the average reader, this book would have a more universal appeal.

Recommendation:    If you are curious about the food scene in Japan, or are already obsessed, I think you will love this book.  Because I fall into both categories, I am giving this book my highest rating.  As much as I loved it, if you aren't really into all things Japan, I think this book will bore you.

Bay Area Book Events #11

This has become such a monstrously large list, that I have decided to only show events four weeks in advance.  The master calendar will continue to show all the events I can find that are listed on each bookstore's site.

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area! I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest. I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human). If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section. Thanks.

All graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.

Blog Tour Review & Giveaway: Just Kill Me by Adam Selzer

Please note:  I received an ARC copy of this book from Irish Banana Tours in exchange for an honest review.  This did not affect the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
Megan Henske isn’t one to heed warnings…

When the last letters in her alphabet cereal are D, I, and E, she doesn’t crawl right back into bed. When her online girlfriend won’t text a photo, she just sends more of herself.

And when she realizes that Cynthia, her boss at a Chicago ghost tour company, isn’t joking about making stops more haunted by killing people there, she doesn’t quit her job—she may even help.

But who is responsible for the deaths of prominent figures in the murdermonger industry? Could it be the head of the rival tour company? Or could it be someone near and dear to Megan?

Soon after she learns that she has an uncanny resemblance to a flapper who disappeared in 1922, Megan receives a warning she can’t ignore: the next ghost on the tour might be her.

Review:
What a premise!  The book is about a group of young adults running a "ghost tour" business around Chicago.  But this book is also about trust and relationships.  Can you believe what a person says in an online relationship?  Do you know when someone is manipulating you?  Megan, who longs for connections with others, finds it challenging to know which truths she can accept, and which are simply justifications for bad behavior.

What I liked:
Setting:
I loved the setting of downtown Chicago!  I have never been to this city, but I felt a need to take a trip there after reading this book.  In the book, the tour takes people around crime scenes, disaster sites and the haunts of various notorious gangsters.  I was fascinated by all the actual ghost stories that are associated with the area.

Use of Language:
One of Megan's coping mechanisms when she is upset is to look up strange old English words on the Oxford English Dictionary site.  She finds lots of ways to work in such words as croft, lair-stow, and the worm's kitchen (all old words for tomb).  This was a fun aspect of the novel that I loved.

Themes:
As I said in the introduction, the book works to explore issues of trust.  What does Megan really know about her online girlfriend?  Despite Megan's pleas (and increasingly raunchy sexting), Zoey won't send her a picture of herself.  Is this a smart privacy precaution or a way to avoid an uncomfortable truth?  Could she be actually a 50 year-old man?  A 12 year-old girl?  As the book progresses, Megan becomes more and more concerned that, while Zoey knows everything about her, Megan really doesn't know much about Zoey.

Megan also doesn't know if she can really trust her former babysitter, Cynthia.  Cynthia flatters her and makes her feel like an adult.  Then, after gaining her trust, begins to involve Megan in activities most reasonable people would find criminal and insane.  Could Cynthia be plotting to kill her and others who stand in her way of becoming a reality TV star?

What I didn't like:

Plot Plausibility:
I am going to try and talk about this without revealing spoilers.
I had a problem accepting that a certain group of people dying over a short period of time would not be investigated.  Some of this is explained away, but I still think the authorities would have been suspicious if this happened.  The characters seem unconcerned about this.  I also thought Megan was remarkably unfazed by what was going on.  For these reasons, I had to deduct 1/2 a star on my rating.

Release Date:  August 30th, 2016

Source:  Irish Banana Tours

Format:  Physical ARC

Recommendation:  This was a fun, lighthearted story about a young person making their own choices beyond high school.  With interesting touches such as the real-life spooky stories, this will be a fun book to read for the Autumn.

About Adam Selzer:
His first book was How To Get Suspended And Influence People (now available in a "Now With More Swearing" edition).  His next one is Play Me Backwards (for satanic young adults) and his best known is probably I Kissed A Zombie And I Liked It, a Twilight satire that was not marketed as a satire.

He also writes the Smart Alexk's Guide series and has published a bunch of Chicago history.ghostlore books.

You can find him under the name SJ Adams, the name he used for Sparks: The Epic, Completely True Blue (Almost) Holy Quest Of Debbie, which won a Stonewall Honor and made the YALSA popular paperback list.
