Bay Area Book Events #22

This has become such a monstrously large list, that I have decided to only show events four weeks in advance.  The master calendar will continue to show all the events I can find that are listed on each bookstore's site.

Bookstores in this list include:
Barnes & Noble (various Bay Area Locations)
Book Passage (Corte Madera & San Francisco)
The Booksmith (San Francisco)

Books Inc. (various Bay Area Locations)
Pegasus Books (Berkeley & Oakland)
Hicklebee's Children's Books (San Jose)
A Great Good Place For Books (Oakland)
Kepler's Books (Menlo Park)

I am attempting to make this a one stop place to find book signings in the San Francisco Bay Area! I will mostly focus on YA books, but I will also include some general fiction if I think it will be of interest. I think this is an extensive list, but there is always the possibility that I missed an event (Hey, I'm human). If you think there is an event that I should include, please leave me a note in the comments section. Thanks.

All graphics have links to GoodReads so you can check them out.

As always, it is a good idea to call the store a day or two before to confirm that the scheduled event is still on.  I have learned that these events change constantly.

If this list seems more sparse than before it's because bookstores don't seem to schedule many events around Thanksgiving...

Stacking The Shelves #56 & Sunday Post #19

I am combining two great blog hops:  Stacking The Shelves (a Saturday feature by Team Tynga's Reviews), and Sunday Post (a Sunday feature by the Caffeinated Book Reviewer).  Both of these features give people a chance to post about what books they received and also an opportunity to catch a glimpse of what others are excited about.  I really enjoy see everyone's version of these features! If you enjoy my blog, please consider following me via Bloglovin, Networked Blogs, GFC, or by email subscription.  If you leave a comment and tell me you are a new follower, I will follow you back! As always, all book cover images are linked to GoodReads so if you see a book you want to learn more about, just click away...

Happening This Week:

It has been a busy time at school as report cards are due and the teachers are extremely busy.  I am an aide, so I try to support the teacher I work with as much as possible.  We are finishing up all of our Thanksgiving projects and I look forward to the week off.

I have also decided that I am tired of doing all the cooking on Thanksgiving while my family sits comfortably watching television or are on their computers.  So I made a list and each person will be in charge of that dish.  So I will do the turkey, but each of my kids (and my husband) will do the vegetables, cranberry sauce, stuffing, etc.  I hope this will make it more of a cooperative meal and not just mom toiling away at the stove.

 My Family's reaction...

NaNoWriMo:
Well...  It's not going very well on the NaNoWriMo front.  I am not a person that is motivated to get things done by pressure.  I want to work hard on my novel, but these imaginary deadlines are not helpful to me.  I still will write this book, but I was just getting more and more frustrated that I couldn't reach my daily word count.

What I have learned from this experience is that I love the creative process.  I love writing, imagining, and finding my characters.  And I really feel I will finish the first draft of my book.  It just might take longer than a month!

Two Movies For Thanksgiving

When I lived in Japan (many years ago), the times I felt most homesick were around the holidays, particularly Thanksgiving.  The fourth Thursday in November isn't special in Japan in any way.  It's just another day at the office.  If you're an English teacher (as I was), Thanksgiving was constantly on your mind as you were asked to explain the event to all of your classes.  While I enjoyed sharing about the holiday with my students, my heart was heavy by the end of the day.

Once bright spot of living overseas during holidays was gathering with other expats to share a special meal.  I have very fond memories of going to large potlucks where each guest brought something to share.  Finding the turkey required a lot of research, train rides to specialty stores, and an insane amount of Yen!  But these times reminded me of the essential meaning of Thanksgiving: Sharing and Thankfulness.

As I make my holiday pies this year, I will watch lots of familiar movies on Amazon and Netflix.  It's a tradition I think many cooks have, to play something warm and comforting as you prepare food.  I've picked two movies that I think encapsulate what Thanksgiving is all about.  They are warm, genuine, and a whole lot of fun!

Pieces Of April (2003):
Before Katie Holmes was Tom Cruise's wife, she was an actress mostly known for the teen melodrama Dawson's Creek.  That all changed in 2003, when she starred in this heartfelt movie about a splintered mother-daughter relationship.  I loved her edgy performance as a young woman trying to make Thanksgiving dinner for the first time.  Everything goes wrong!  With each disaster, various neighbors help her though.  All the while, her parents are driving towards her apartment and, little by little, the backstory of what is happening is revealed.
How to see it:  Stream it on Amazon Video, YouTube, iTunes, and Google Play for $2.99

What's Cooking (2000):
This movie is the epitome of what America is all about.  Four families living in Los Angeles prepare for Thanksgiving, each in their own way.  Each groups is from a different ethnic background, and the movie bounces between stories as we see how each family customizes this American holiday, making it their own.   I recognized my own Mexican family in this film.  In addition to making turkey and mashed potatoes, we would always include "grandma's rice" (Mexican rice) with the meal.  One year my cousin was dating an Italian guy and her brought over lasagna.  he said it wasn't Thanksgiving without it.  I love how the stories intertwine in this movie.  It's a celebration of food, family, and what it means to be an American.

How To see it:  Stream it on Amazon Video, YouTube, iTunes, and Google Play for $2.99

ARC Review: Haven by Katherine Bogle

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30119375-haven

Please Note:  I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions of my review in any way.

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
Princess Haven was never meant to be Queen.

Her immortality has saved her time and time again, but when the last of her royal family dies at her feet, she is next in line to rule a nation on the brink of war. With no formal training on how to be Queen, Haven must rise to the occasion with the help of her best friends, and personal guard, or risk losing everyone she has ever loved.

With war to the West, and no escape to the East, the evil tyrant Kadia sets her sights on the six kingdoms. Haven’s neighbors are quick to fall under the swords of Kadia’s shadow soldiers, leaving a sea of bodies and a clear path to Haven’s only home.

As Kadia’s obsession with Haven mounts, little time remains, and Haven must make a choice; join together with her fellow Royals, and test her immortality in a final stand against the evil Queen, or flee across the sea to a foreign republic in hopes of salvation. Both choices have a cost. Both plans could go awry. Haven must decide quickly, or she might be the only one left.

Review:
I love books about queens and royalty.  Throw in some fantasy elements and a little romance, and I'm at the mercy of the author.  They are fun, and escapist novels.  While this book did have those elements, it had a depth to it that I was not expecting.  It was also, at times, an incredibly violent and disturbing book that I would only recommend to older teens and adults.

What I liked:
Characters:
Haven endures so much throughout this book.  She starts off as an innocent teen who's family is murdered by Kadia, The Mad Queen.  She has been gifted/cursed with immortality which seems to only bring pain to her life.  Over time, many terrible things happen to her that leave her scared, anxious, and angry.

The trials she must endure are very difficult to read through.  But I love that Haven is able to work through her pain and fear.  She must learn to use these emotions to regain control of her life.  And she has a wonderful group of friends to guide her way.

Haven's girl guards are a group of female warriors who have been assigned to protect the queen.  But as Haven rightly points out, she can't be killed.  She can, however, be damaged psychologically.  When Haven's life is broken from the abuse she takes from Kadia, it is these kind, patient, friends who help her pick up the pieces.  I loved the support they gave her.  While it did take a while for her friends to comprehend what Haven needed (She did NOT want to talk it out), they were finally able to help her channel her emotions into making her a powerful advocate for others (and a strong warrior, as well).

World-building:
This book is set in a world much like our own in the middle ages (a popular trope), but then makes little tweaks to create a surprising land.  Besides Haven's immortality, Kadia has the power to control others, transform shadows into deadly soldiers, and predict the future.   Later, another character has even more unusual abilities.  Interestingly, the only ones (so far in the series) with powers are women!  There are also frightening creatures that the group encounters on a journey.

What I Didn't Like:
Depictions of Violence and Rape:
While I understand that these elements are essential to the transformation of Haven from a naive teen into a woman, the scenes of violence toward her were very hard to read.

I think what disturbed me most about these scenes was that they were so sudden and random.  If you have triggers for violence or rape, I don't think you should read this book.

Rating:

Release Date:  May 11th, 2016

Genre:  YA Fantasy

Source:  NetGalley

Format:  ARC E-Book

Recommendation:  This an imaginative book with plenty of action and romance.  But I wouldn't recommend this to people who have triggers for extreme violence or rape.
