ARC Review: The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43557477-the-jane-austen-society?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=mda80vV8wR&rank=1
Please Note:  I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Just after the Second World War, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. These people—a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others—could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war, others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society.

Review:
I am a huge fan of Jane Austen, having read all of her novels several times.  And there actually is a Jane Austen Society of North America that I am considering joining!  This novel, The Jane Austen Society, by Natalie Jenner, is a fictionalized look at the origins of the Society that began in Chawton, England, one of the places where Jane Austen lived.  It is so much fun because it reads like an Austen novel.  There is the idyllic country village setting with a group of villagers who are into each other's business.  There are also several potential romantic couples, and regrets of moments lost.  This was a wonderful novel.

What I Liked:

Setting:
Life in England was harsh right after WWII.  Even though the war had ended, there were still food shortages and the personal losses of loved ones.  And this was on top of all the  losses from the first world war.  People were emotionally and financially shredded. I liked all the details that the author provided to show the accumulated effects.  It showed how devastating these world events were to everyone.

Characters:
There are so many wonderful characters in this book.  Doctor Grey is a man who seems to be a blend between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Knightly.  He is both astute about people like Mr, Knightly (Emma), and at times oblivious like Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice).

I also loved Adeline, the young war widow.  Her outgoing, optimistic view of the world is shattered by a number of tragedies.  She reminded me most of Jane in Pride and Prejudice.

There is also a subplot about an American movie star who is a rabid Jane Austen fan.  At first, this doesn't seem to fit with the other characters.  But I found her to be a good reminder that people all over the world can relate to Austen's works.

Plot Points:
There are several plot points that parallel situations in various Jane Austen novels.  From similarities to Mr. Darcy and Jane in Pride and Prejudice,  to long ago engagements as in Persuasion, the mirroring of plot devices are fun to notice and are well executed.  This is especially true in the subplot of the forgotten romance between the daughter of a local gentry and a solicitor, which will remind readers of Persuasion (my favorite of Austen's books).  I was squealing in delight!

Stacking The Shelves & Sunday Post 2020 #3

I am combining two great weekly blog hops:  Stacking The Shelves by Team Tynga's Reviews, and Sunday Post by Caffeinated Reviewer.  I hope to read as many of the blogs from these two hops as possible because I love to see what everyone is reading!

If you enjoy my blog, please consider following me at Bloglovin, Goodreads, or Twitter.  Let me know you're a new follower so I can follow you back!

Happenings:
Oh how I wish I was more motivated this past week.  I found it hard to read and stay on track with my health goals!  I am blaming it on the weather here in Northern California.

via GIPHY

It's been dark, cold, and rainy, which makes me want to just snuggle in bed and not get moving.  Yes, I am a wimp!  But I'll take warm weather over cold, any day of the week!

I did get myself to my book club meeting at my favorite Indy Bookstore, A Great Good Place For Books.  What a fabulous little gem in the Oakland Hills!  We discussed our latest read, Fever, by Mary Beth Keane.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15802983-fever?from_search=true&qid=lZaNtXVq23&rank=15

This historical fiction deals with Irish immigrant, Mary Mallon, better known as "Typhoid Mary".  It was so vivid in its descriptions of New York City at the beginnings of the twentieth-century, and had a complex cast of characters.  I really enjoyed it.

Our next pick is The Fountains of Silence, by Ruta Sepetys.  This is a YA historical fiction set in Spain in the 1950's.  It looks really compelling.

Read This Week:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41556894-the-conference-of-the-birds?from_search=true&qid=rRU90qVoQ6&rank=2

I enjoyed all of these books!  Both Blood Heir and The Conference of The Birds were audio books.  I finally finished Tweet Cute, and actually liked it.  I say actually because I was finding it hard to get through, at times.  I think this was because it often wandered close to several Rom-com clichés (which made me put the book down a few times), but then it would take a different route.  Ultimately, it was quite entertaining and fun.

I enjoyed the audio book of The Conference of The Birds, by Ransom Riggs.  But you really need the pictures that he includes in his books to really get the full, eerie, effect.  So I went ahead and bought it!  I also bought One of Us Is Lying be Karen M. McManus.  Since I need to read it before reading One of Us is Next, I luckily found it on sale on my Kindle!

The Last Train to Key West was a download on Edelweiss.  I was so happy to see this book, as Chanel Cleeton has been a solid historical fiction writer.  I have really enjoyed her other books, which usually deal with Cuba in the 1950's and 60's.  I can't wait to read this one.

I was able to get an advance audio copy of One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus, from the good people at Penguin Random House Audio!  I've heard a lot about this series, so I hope it lives up to the hype.

That's it for this week.  How are all of you doing on your goals?

Happenings:
This week was all about getting back into the routines of work, exercise, and daily reading.

I found it hard to get moving in the morning, partly because it was so cold, but also because I was attempting to cut down on coffee...

Needless to say, that was not great.  I did exercise in the afternoons, and tried to eat better.  It's a matter of trying to keep moving forward, even if I don't meet my goal all of the time.

Reading:
Reading was tough this week.  I am reading two review books on my Kindle that are...Meh.  I hope to finish them soon so I can move on to books I really like.

I am listening to a wonderful audio book called Blood Heir, by Amelie Wen Zhao.  It's a YA fantasy with wonderful world-building, intriguing characters, and lots of action.  I hope to be finished with it this weekend.

Stacking The Shelves: 2020 Edition

I am combining two great weekly blog hops:  Stacking The Shelves by Team Tynga's Reviews, and Sunday Post by Caffeinated Reviewer.  I hope to read as many of the blogs from these two hops as possible because I love to see what everyone is reading!

Personal Update:
It's been a time of great change in my house since school started.  I changed jobs, and my youngest child went off to college VERY far away!  And while all these changes are very good things, they've been huge adjustments for me and my family.  Plus, it has forced me to face the fact that I am getting older and need to be thoughtful prioritizing how I spend my limited free time.

via GIPHY

With all this reflection, I am naturally rethinking how much energy I want to spend on books and blogging.  I really love books and sharing my thoughts with others on what I've read.  But I want to be deliberate in what I do.  I don't want to just read anything, just because I can get an ARC for free.

I write this as I look over at my overflowing bookshelves!  So my intention for this year is to actually read what I already own!

With a goal of reading 10 books a month (normal for me), here is my game plan:

ARC's:  2 to 3 per month
Library Books:  2 to 3 per month
Books I own:  at least 4 per month

I do still plan on buying one book a month to participate in a local book club, but I will TRY to limit myself to just the one book.

Can I do this?

What are some of your bookish goals?

Last Week on the Blog:
I was only able to post one review, but I have lots of reviews in the works for the rest of the summer!  I really enjoyed Something Like Gravity, by Amber Smith.  It's about a transgender boy trying to figure out how to live his life after a brutal attack.

In Real Life:
I had my first introduction to my new manager and co-workers this week.  They are so kind!  I am super excited to begin work, and so very grateful for this opportunity!  As a reward, I used my gift card at my local bookstore!  So I have several new books to read.  I have one more week of vacation before my new job begins.  So I will be using this free time to binge read!

Stacking The Shelves #90 & Sunday Post #53

On The Blog:

I'm starting to get lots of email subscribers!  Thank you to all who follow me.  As you know, the more followers I have, the better my chances are of getting approved to review new books!

I almost signed up for a program called Bloggers For Books.  It is part of Random House and, at first, I thought it was a great program that would allow me to request more books from Random House.  However, as I was signing up, they asked for more and more information.  Plus they wanted me to sign up for a service called Klout.  I have never heard of this website before.  It kind of looked like Bloglovin, and it wanted me to add posts for my book reviews.  It made me nervous because it appeared that once I posted a review, they would be able to control it, which includes using it in promotions without seeking further permission from me.  This made me so uncomfortable that I cancelled both Bloggers For Books and Klout.

Are any of you signed up with Bloggers For Books or Klout?  They also said that they could control your Blogger posts and control your tweets on Twitter.  I felt that they were trying to control too much of the content that I create.  How comfortable are you with how they use your reviews?

In Real Life:
Summer is winding down, and I am busy trying to get my son ready for his first semester at college!!!  He is excited and so am I.  There is so much to do, as he will attend two "boot camps" for Math and English.  These seem like great programs to review concepts so he is totally ready to roll once school starts.

One of my other sons is busy practicing for his driving test!  I am taking him out to drive every day and I think he has improved tremendously.  Next Thursday is the big day. Yikes!!!

New Books:
Won From Goodreads:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28448287-replica?from_search=true

Apparently, people actually DO win Goodreads giveaways!  I have entered so many of them, and I finally won this lovely book!  Thank you, Harper Collins.

NetGalley:

I'm very excited to read this new book from Andy Weir!  I loved The Martian, so I have high hopes for this novel.

Well, I went into the thrift store looking for a particular book for my daughter (Life Of Pi, she needs to read it for school).  Did I find that book?  Of course not! But I found these two books and they look really good, so I went ahead and spend $3.00. So much for my spending freeze.

On The Blog Last Week:

I feel really lucky to have been able to read more this week.  Nothing makes me crankier than to not get enough reading time in!  Also, I was able to do one post each day, including two ARCs!!!

Monday:  Bay Area Book Events

Tuesday:  ARC Review:  My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

Wednesday:  Book Review:  Champion by Marie Lu

Thursday:  Book Review:  The Young Elites by Marie Lu

Friday:  ARC Review:  City Of Saints & Thieves by Natalie C. Anderson

In "Real" Life:

It has been non-stop rain, here in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The drought is most definitely over in Northern California.   But all that rain has made for lots of treacherous driving, downed trees, and flooding.

On Monday, my daughter and I braved the weather to venture to Marin to see Stephanie Garber in conversation with Veronica Rossi.  It was a fun event. I was able to really get a feel for Stephanie's taste in books (we both loved The Diabolic by SJ Kincaid) and I always learn more about writing at these events.

I even bumped into another blogger, Kaitlin, who I see at book signings all over the Bay Area.

Her blog is called Next Page Please and it is delightful.

On Wednesday, a tree fell onto the road to the town where I work.  My daughter and I sat for almost an hour and then had to turn around and go the LONG way around.  It took us a total of two-and a half HOURS to get to work.  Thankfully, this only happens on this road about once every two years, but boy was that Not Fun!

No new books this week!  I have finally just been able to sit down and start to tackle what I already have.  I did finish three books last week:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29995905-city-of-saints-thieveshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30320008-the-valianthttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16060716-lair-of-dreams

All three of these books were wonderful, but I particularly loved Lair Of Dreams by Libba Bray.  It is epic in scale, scary, and is set in the Roaring 20's.

Stacking The Shelves #53 & Sunday Post #16

 What I've been up to:
It was another great week of book events in the Bay Area!  I was able to go to a book signing at the Barnes & Noble in Emeryville and meet Kiersten White (And I Darken) and Arwen Elys Dayton (Traveller).  Due to the rain, one of the authors, Jessica Cluess (A Shadow Bright And Burning), had to cancel as her plane was delayed.  I was bummed as I really liked her book and wanted to meet her.  But there was a positive aspect to that rain: it also prevented may people from coming to the signing.  I hope this doesn't seem selfish, but this made for a very cozy gathering.  We got to talk to the authors and really have a great conversation about writing, and the different approaches they use.

The rest of my week was taken up with reading, writing blog posts for November, and getting ready for Halloween.  I feel pretty prepared and ready for a fun-filled day at school on Monday as we have our Halloween parade and party.

New Books:
Bought:

These are the beauties I got at the Barnes & Noble book signing!  I have already read an ARC of A Shadow Bright And Burning, but I really wanted a print edition so I can lend it out to my friends and share this wonderful book with them.  I was telling this to Kiersten White and she said she was so happy that people who get ARCs also buy the books when they come out.  I told her I really wanted to support this book since I enjoyed it so much.

I saw Haven on so many people's Stacking The Shelves last weekend that I had to request it.  And I thought that the title for Daughter Of The Pirate King was so intriguing that I had to request that one as well.  I can't wait to dive in to both of these books!  But I may need to wait in order to concentrate on my November writing project...

What new books did you get this week?  Are you going to do NaNoWriMo in November (that's in 3 days: Yikes!)?  Let me know in the comments, and have a great week.
