Happenings in the last two weeks:
School, kids, birthdays, book events... It all caught up with me in the last few weeks and I have gotten seriously behind on my blogging. While it has been busy, I have also had lots of fun with my kids, my students, and with going to a wonderful book event. But I am also fighting a cold now. So if I haven't been as quick to respond to comments or emails, please be patient.Last Saturday was "Loop Day" and we were insanely fortunate to have Ransom Riggs in the Bay Area for a series of book signings for his new book, Tales Of The Peculiar. I was first in line at one of the events at a cute bookstore called A Great Good Place For Books in Oakland.
I Spy adorable couple Taherer Mafi & Ransom Riggs! |
Ransom was there with his beautiful wife, Taherer Mafi (so glamorous and she had a delightfully cool manicure!), so I got a copy of her new book, Furthermore, and she signed it for me. I was really happy that this signing was early in the day (I think this was the second of five book signings they did that day). Both of the writers were very personable and it was a thrill to meet them.
The next day was my daughter's birthday and we threw her a surprise party! At her own request, we have not given her a proper birthday party in about 5 years and her friends have been at me to do something for her. So we took her to all all-night diner for a "treat" and her friends were all there. We stayed there until 1am and then it was back to our house for eight player Super Smash Brothers.
With all this running around (and starting a new temporary assignment at work) I am now fighting a cold. So this weekend is all about sleep!
Read in the last 2 weeks:
I've been making progress with the galleys I have, but most of them left me flat. One notable exception was the wonderful book by Gayle Forman called Leave Me. It was released on September 6th. This is from the author of the If I Stay series (which I did not care for), but I loved this book so much! It is about a woman who has a life-altering illness and everyone still expects her to do everything for everyone else. I could completely relate to this book.
New This week:
I've already started Tales Of The Peculiar and it is rather like Grimm's Fairy-Tales, at times gory and strange, but also lovely.

First In Line Program:
I received a copy of this amazing book as part of the "First In Line" program from Penguin/Random House. I was first in line at an event at Barnes & Noble in June and this was the prize: Every two months, I will get a book in the mail. I have happened to already read this wonderful book as part of the Irish Banana Blog Tour, but I am happy to get a physical copy so I can share it with others. This was a powerfully written book about a girl who self-harms by cutting. It helped me to understand about a subject I knew nothing about. If you haven't already, read it soon!
From Edelweiss:
So many people have gotten this that I had to see what all the fuss was about. I will be starting it soon, so I hope it is as wonderful as the stunning cover (Yes, I am easily swayed by a pretty cover).
So what are you excited to read this week? Let me know in the comments.
Lucky girl, your signings must have been a fantastic moment for you. Thanks for sharing it with us and happy reading.
ReplyDeletehere is my STS
best wishes
Vi @ Gone With The Books
it was very thrilling to meet Ransom Riggs! He was very soft-spoken and seemed really happy!
DeleteSooooo cool Ardis! Ransom looks like a giant next to you :D.
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know there was an 8 player mode of Super Smash Brothers. Not that I know 7 other people who would enjoy it anyways ;). Get well soon!
Yes, Ransom Riggs is super tall & I am rather short! His wife if tiny, too! They were such a cute couple! I think Super Smash Brothers is a great way for my shy kids to play with others. But the kids did get rather rowdy during the game. I don't think the neighbors were bothered though...
DeleteOoh nice! I would love to meet Tahereh one of these days! I got close when I "saw" her at BEA, but I never got to her line! And ooh Fear the Drowning Deep! I have that on my kindle to read as well! Hope you enjoy all the new reads!
ReplyDeleteMy STS will be up tomorrow, so stop by then if you can!
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
Oh my gosh, Teherer was so beautiful and nice. The bookstore didn't know that she would be there to sign er books, so they only had 5 copies. Since I was first in line, I was able to snag a copy (and what a beautiful cover!) and she signed it for me!!!
DeleteWow, it looks like you’ve been busy. I love the photos, and I hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
It's been fun, but I don't feel like I have my act together, you know? Today will be all about writing reviews and seeing if this headache from my cold will ever go away. Thanks for the well wishes.
DeleteWow, busy busy! You might need a break from all the shenanigans! That's cool that you got to meet Ransom Riggs. I hope you enjoy all of your new books!
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous week. :)
Check out my STS post!
Thank you, Alyssa. Tales Of The Peculiar is a quick, fun read. I enjoyed it very much. When you have four kids, there isn't much time for breaks. But I need to remember they won't be at home forever. Have a great week.
DeleteThe book signing sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteI loved Leave Me, and I am eager to get a copy of She Made Me Laugh. I'm a big fan of Nora Ephron.
Enjoy your week...that birthday party sounded like fun. Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
Thank you, Laurel. If your a fan of Nora Ephron, you will enjoy She Made Me Laugh. I think it is only for the super-fan though. If one wasn't familiar with her work, I think the book would be boring.
DeleteLooks like a wonderful bookstore and a great signing. Didn't know Riggs and Mafi were married, that's neat. And I'm keen to read Fear The Drowning Deep too- I thin it looks great.
ReplyDeleteYes, they were such a cute couple! I think I will read Fear The Drowning Deep next, as it looks great.
