It is an abundance of riches for me right now. First, there are TWO author events in my area this week. We NEVER get author events in the East Bay! Second, there are so many amazing books that have come out today, and last week that I am overcome with book choices!
So today I went to the first of two book events at my local Barnes & Noble to meet authors Suzanne Young, Morgan Matson, and Siobhan Vivian.
This was a very small event with, perhaps 25 people attending. It made it very intimate as we got to listen to each author read a passage from their book. Since they are touring together, they chose a theme for the evening: first meetings. As each author spoke, we could really get a feel for the books and the humor that filled then pages.

Then we got to get in line for the actual signing of the books! Each author was so nice. Since this was a small audience, everyone was able to talk with the authors and I think they all did a nice job of making each person feel listened to and valued.
They also had some fun gifts: Siobhan made yummy cookies and gave each person a cool pin. Morgan Matson gave each person a fun canvas bag! She also did a raffle for tee shirts, and a mixed CD.
Suzanne Young was also a very gracious author. I have not read her books and she was promoting a book, The Epidemic, that is part of a series. I honestly didn't know if I could read this novel outright, or if I really needed to read it in sequence with her other books. It seemed to deal with a difficult subject (suicide) in a way that made you want to read it. I will be looking for her books in the future.
If there was one criticism I would give to publishers right now, it would be that there are simply too many great books coming out all at once. Hey publishers: Do you think we are made of money? Do you think we can seriously read 12 - 16 major books in a month? I am a fast reader, but even I cannot pull that off. And I don't want to! Many of these books that have come out recently are sequels or finales. I want to savor reading these. I have looked forward to some of these books for years, and I don't want to rip through them.
Please, please, please space out your big releases in the future. You will get better sales in the long run, and less stressed out book bloggers, too!
Omg, this is SO cool! I've been trying to get my hands on The Unexpected Everything for months now, and there you are, with the author standing right next to you! Awe-some. I definitely feel the same way when it comes to too many big releases coming out at the same time. Ain't nobody got time for that! Like, literally. I remember the same thing happening in the beginning of February. It's gonna take me a long time to catch up with everything!
ReplyDeleteYes! I feel like I am spinning around trying to read everything all at once! Too much of a good thing! Coming up tomorrow: The authors of Illuminae!!! I am beyond excited (and exhausted, too!).
DeleteGasp! *grabs popcorn* And take a deep breath while meditating on the toilet once in a while ;).
DeleteOh I am so envious! I love MM and SV, especially. ♥ I wanted to be there with all of these authors, if only I didn't live out of the state!
ReplyDeleteHi Eva. You should do an internet search to find their other tour dates. They said they were on a long book tour to promote their books, so they may come to your town!
