Blog Tour Review: Confessions on the 7:45 by Lisa Unger

Please Note: I received an advance copy of this novel as part of the blog tour to promote this book.  This did not influence the opinions in my review.  I had the option to opt out of the tour if I didn't enjoy the book.

Synopsis:

Bestselling and award-winning author Lisa Unger returns with her best novel yet. Reminiscent of the classic Strangers on a Train, Confessions on the 7:45 is a riveting psychological thriller that begins with a chance encounter on a commuter train and shows why you should never, ever make conversation
with strangers.

Be careful who you tell your darkest secrets...

Selena Murphy is commuting home from her job in the city when the train stalls out on the tracks. She strikes up a conversation with a beautiful stranger in the next seat, and their connection is fast and easy.  The woman introduces herself as Martha and confesses that she's been stuck in an affair with her boss.  Selena, in turn, confesses that she suspects her husband is sleeping with the nanny. When the train arrives at Selena's station, the two women part ways, presumably never to meet again.

But days later, Selena's nanny disappears.

Soon Selena finds her once-perfect life upended. As she is pulled into the mystery of the missing nanny, and as the fractures in her marriage grow deeper, Selena begins to wonder, who was Martha really? But she is hardly prepared for what she'll discover.

Expertly plotted and reminiscent of the timeless classic Strangers on a Train, Confessions on the 7:45 is a stunning web of lies and deceit, and a gripping thriller about the delicate facades we create around our lives.

Review:

The reason I enjoy Lisa Unger's writing is because she weaves so many truths into her stories that she makes it seem like anyone can become a killer, given the right circumstances.  That is truly terrifying!  Her latest novel, Confessions on the 7:45, has characters we might know: the harried woman juggling a career, children and her marriage, the husband who can placate his wife enough so she won't divorce him, and the mysterious woman who is just a little too friendly.  This was a wonderful book, that I raced through.

What I Liked:

Setting:

The book is set in busy world of a woman trying to keep it all together.  Hers is a world with nannies, working long hours, and having even longer commutes.  Work is everything and an escape from her marriage.

The book also follows the life of a con artist.  How does she become so good at being so bad?  She moves from city to city as she learns about creating different identities from her mentor, known as Pops.  It's strangely fascinating to see how they target lonely women and con them into giving them money.  It's a life I don't know, but now feel like I might understand.

Characters:

Selena is such an identifiable character.  She seems to have it all: two children, a loving husband, and an enviable career.  She is very eager to show all the good parts of her life on Instagram.  But is her life really so great?  She works long hours with a soul crushing commute.  Her husband is "between jobs", growing more and more resentful as the months go on.  And she feels immense guilt over not having time to be the mother she wants.  She's too busy to have many friends.  So she is a prime target for Martha, the con artist.

Martha goes by dozens of names depending which con she is working on.  And actually she has many enviable organizational skills.  But she is totally lacking in an morals or empathy.  How did she get this way?  The novel takes us on that journey.  I found it scary and fascinating.

Much as I didn't like him, Graham's charismatic personality made him fascinating to me.  How and why did Selena marry him in the first place?  Little by little we see his true nature.  How is it that a man who truly is an attentive parent also be a terrible husband?

Story:

The story revolves around the disappearance of Selena and Graham's nanny.  There are so many questions.  Is she dead?  Kidnapped?  Did she just get sick of taking care of other's children and voluntarily leave?  No one knows.

But, as the investigation continues, Selena and Graham's marriage is dissected bit by bit, putting even more stress on their marriage.

Then there's the strange encounter between Selena and Martha, from the train...  Who is she?  As Selena confesses her marital problems to Martha (a total stranger), Martha exits the train with a thought, "Who knows, maybe your problems will just disappear".  Could Martha have something to do with the nanny's disappearance?  Or is she primed to blackmail Selena?

ARC Review: Under My Skin by Lisa Unger

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36645003-under-my-skin?ac=1&from_search=true
Please Note:  I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence the opinions in my review in any way.

Synopsis (From Netgalley):
What if the nightmares are actually memories?

It's been a year since Poppy's husband, Jack, was brutally murdered during his morning run through Manhattan's Riverside Park. In the immediate aftermath, Poppy spiraled into an oblivion of grief, disappearing for several days only to turn up ragged and confused wearing a tight red dress she didn't recognize. What happened to Poppy during those lost days? And more importantly, what happened to Jack?

The case was never solved, and Poppy has finally begun to move on. But those lost days have never stopped haunting her. Poppy starts having nightmares and blackouts--there are periods of time she can't remember, and she's unable to tell the difference between what is real and what she's imagining. When she begins to sense that someone is following her, Poppy is plunged into a game of cat and mouse, determined to unravel the mystery around her husband's death. But can she handle the truth about what really happened?

Review:
A few years ago, quite by accident, I read another Lisa Unger book called, Ink and Bone.  I was actually looking for a book with the same title by a different author (Rachel Caine), requesting an e-book version.  I was going to return the book, but thought I should read a chapter, just to see what that book was about...  And I was hooked!

Under My Skin, Lisa Unger's latest book, is a thrilling trip into the mind of a woman who may, or may not, know why her husband was murdered.  Through the haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, Poppy must sort through which of her dreams are fantasy, paranoia, or memories.  This book was a wild ride, and I willingly called shotgun!

What I Liked:

Characters:
Poppy is a wonderful character who is unsure of her reality.   Far from a perfect person, her life is so painful she is often tempted to lose herself in drugs, alcohol, or mindless hookups.  Everyone keeps telling her to accept that her husband's murder was a case of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  But she has a strong feeling that something doesn't feel right.  I love how she realizes that she is being manipulated and that she finds a way to regain control of her life.

Meanwhile, every time life presents a problem, well-meaning childhood friend, Layla, throws money around to solve it. At first she seems like an obnoxious, pampered lady who lunches.  But when we find out about her past of abuse and poverty, we can understand why security is so important to her.

Noah is one of the men that Poppy meets through online dating.  Is he the sweet guy that he appears to be, or a stalker who obsesses over women.  And did Poppy actually get with him before her husband's death?

Narrative Style:
This was a wonderful example of the unreliable narrator.  Is Poppy a depressed widow, an unfaithful spouse who's lover murdered her husband, a woman losing her mind to a steady diet of drugs and alcohol?  There are missing days and weeks that Poppy can't account for.  Part of the mystery is Poppy trying to piece together what happened to her, so she can understand what happened to her husband.  Right up to the end, we don't know know the whole story.

Easter Egg:
If you are a fan of the author's other books, there is a passing reference to The Hollows, the setting of several of her other novels.  While this book is a stand alone work, it seems as though it does take place in the same universe as Ink and Bone!  When I realized this I squealed in delight!

What I Was Mixed About:
Although the ending is very exciting, it is dependent on the reader believing that Poppy has no sense of self-preservation.  Throughout the book, she seems to have a death wish, putting herself in potential danger again and again.  While the author does show us a pattern of "inviting the dark", it's hard to believe anyone could be so reckless.

Book Review: Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28505016-ink-and-bone

Synopsis (From GoodReads):
For as long as she can remember, twenty-year-old Finley Montgomery has been able to see into the future. She dreams about events before they occur and sees beyond the physical world, unconsciously using her power to make supernatural things happen.

But Finley can’t control these powers—and there’s only one person who can help. So Finley moves to The Hollows, a small town in upstate New York where her grandmother lives, a renowned seer who can finally teach Finley how to use her gift.

A gift that is proving to be both a blessing and a curse, as Finley lands in the middle of a dangerous investigation involving a young girl who has been missing for ten months and the police have all but given up hope.

With time running out there’s only so much Finley can do as The Hollows begins to reveal its true colors. As she digs deeper into the town and its endless layers, nothing is what it seems. But one thing is clear: The Hollows gets what it wants, no matter what.

Review:
I've got a confession to make:  I picked this up by (a happy) mistake!  I thought I was getting the audiobook version of Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine, an epic fantasy.  Instead I got this gritty, scary, gem of a book and I couldn't have been more lucky!  It was thoroughly entertaining.

The story revolves mainly around two people:  Finley, a teenage psychic, and the mother of a missing child named Merri.

Finley's struggle for self identity is one that is universal.  While they may not have psychic powers, most young people are trying hard to figure out who they are apart from how their family sees them.  Finley is fighting to be her own person, doing anything that will set her apart such as riding a motorcycle and covering herself in tattoos.  She enjoys being reckless, but she also is starting to realize she doesn't want to be stoned, hungover, or hanging with people who can only think of partying.    Trying to get her life together, she flees to The Hollows to start college.  She wants to concentrate on school, exams, and on her on again, off again boyfriend, but the things she dreams about, sees and hears cannot be ignored.

Merri is living a nightmare.  Her beautiful child, Abby, is abducted during a family vacation at The Hollows.  Almost a year of searches and media attention has taken a toll on her already shaky marriage. Her husband is ready to move on but she can't let go.  Merri contacts a private detective who works with Finley's grandmother (another psychic) to make one more attempt at finding Abby.

I loved not only these women's personal dramas, but also the central mystery of where Abby might be.  And are there other girls sharing her fate?  Where is she being held?  Could her abductors be hiding in plain sight?

The book does a wonderful job of inhabiting the lives of each character.  I found the scenes of Abby creepy and frightening.  You root for her to be found.  I found it impossible to stop listening to this audiobook.  It was suspenseful and had an urgency that was mesmerizing.
