Stacking the Shelves #3

This feature was originally started by Team Tynga's Reviews.  Please check out their wonderful blog.

With getting ready for Halloween, I didn't read too many books.  I only read Vicious by V.E. Schwab throughout the week.  Then I floundered about what the read next.  I finally settled on an ARC of Crystallum by Laney McMann.  It looks good so far.  This was "The week of free books!" as you will soon discover.  Beside my approvals from NetGalley, I went thrifting and found two great books.  Then I got notified from my library that two books I have been waiting on for ages had arrived.  Finally, the big score:  a co-worker was cleaning out her bookshelf and brought a giant box of books to school!  I only took five books, but wanted several more.  I think we are thinking of setting up a lending library in the break room, so I will happily return these books when I finish them and add others to the work library.  I think this is a wonderful idea and am so happy to be working with people who love reading as much as I do.

  3. Do you ever feel like there are long gaps in titles you want from Netgalley, then all of a sudden there are tons? It sure goes in cycles for me. Hope you love your new additions to the TBR!

  4. That's a very eclectic mix of books. I read Madame Bovary a while ago when I decided that I really ought to read more of the classics that I had failed to read while in school. It was pretty good, but I was painfully aware that the writing style and vocabulary is significantly different than in contemporary books.

I wound up with a lot of books this week due to library books suddenly showing up, too. I've been trying to stay away from NetGalley for a while so that I can focus on finishing up my challenges for 2015.

  5. I love my Library! I usually get my books from there so it was weird to get to own so many physical books this week. I read Madame Bovary in college, and I remember being really mad at the injustice of it. I wanted to read it again and see how a few decades changes my perspective (if at all).

  7. Great haul! The book lending is a great idea. I want to do to something like it in my area but I have a hard time trusting people with my books. BUT maybe I can start with buying books from thrift stores and setting those up for lending instead. haha, we'll see.

    1. I think once I give a book away, I don't expect it to come back. Hopefully, the person can pass it on to someone else to enjoy. I hope the lending library we set up at work will be "put a book in, take a book out", and that as people finish a book they will bring it back to get another.

  14. What intriguing-looking ARC choices - historical fiction is wonderful!

Have you finished / ever read "Madame Bovary"? I'm halfway through it, myself. Lovely prose - i can only imagine how much better it must be in its original French!

    1. Hi Paloma, I have read Madame Bovary in college and I remember being really angry about it (maybe by the double standards for men). I want to re-read it, but I will not get to it until December. Thanks for commenting.
