Stacking The Shelves #38 & Sunday Post #1

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly feature hosted by Team Tynga's Reviews.  Each week, nearly 100 bloggers share what they got in their book hauls!  It is really fun to blog hop and see all the goodies!

This week, I will also be linking up with the Sunday Post weekly feature hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  I've seen a lot of fellow bloggers link up with this meme, so I hope to gain a wider audience by joining.

If you like what you see, please follow me.  Just let me know which method you used in the comments, and I will follow you back!

Personal Stuff:

I had a quick visit down in Santa Barbara (California) over the Independence Day holiday.  I got to see my husband's family and watch the fireworks on the Rivera (a swanky part of town overlooking the city).  They put on a great show.  I am so grateful for my Mother-in-law for putting us up and making wonderful meals throughout our stay.  She is amazing!

The next day,  I went with my daughter to Carpenteria to see my lovely Aunt and her friends.  This woman is 88 years old, and has the most wonderful group of friends.  Around this very small town they are called Los Tres Mosqueteros! They go everywhere together, and are always laughing.  We had a great visit at one of their homes.

Soon the trip was over and we were back to our regular lives.  On our way home (a six hour car ride), my husband got a call from work asking him to come to the office the next day.  I was quite mad as this is his vacation week.  But he took it in stride and told them yes.  This man has can never get a chance to relax!  I need to fix that...

On My Blog:

Sat. July 2nd - Stacking The Shelves #37

Mon. July 4th - SF Bay Area Book Events #2

Tues. July 5th - ARC Review:  Learning To Swear In America

Wed. July 6th -  Book Review: Unicorn Tracks

I wrote four posts last week, featuring my new resource for people living in the Bay Area:  San Francisco Bay Area Book Events.  Each week, I am going to list all the book events around the area that I think people will be interested in.  There is actually a lot of events, but going through all the various bookstore websites has been a pain.  I hope by having them all in one place, people who live in this area will have a resource to check out book events.  I plan to update this list weekly.

All book covers are linked with GoodReads, so if your interested, just click away...

This has been a fun week of reading for me!  All three of these books were fabulous.  I can't believe it took me this long to dive in to the Air Awakens series!  With a new book coming out on Tuesday, I need to hurry up and keep reading this saga!  Ditto with Fangirl.  What a sweet and wonderful story.  Valley of the Moon was a delight.  I will be reviewing it in the next few weeks.

New Books:

 Kindle:

Well, you know I just need to read on, right?  Both of these are sequels to the books I read last week.  I just hope I can read them soon.  I hate to have large gaps in reading books from a series (mostly because I am very forgetful).

From NetGalley:

This looks like a good book about sisters coping with their mom having cancer.  This is a subject near and dear to my heart.

From The Library:

This is an audiobook of a popular podcast that my daughter loves.  I think it is an acquired taste.  So far, I am feeling meh over it.

So how was your week?  What books did you receive?  Are you enjoying your summer?  Let's talk!

  1. Nice haul, Ardis :)
It sounds like your little trip was nice, but not so good that your husband got called into work during his vacation week. That's not something we see in Europe - vacation is holy, and if a boss called employees during their vacation he or she would be in trouble.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

    1. Ah, to live in Europe! I did live in England for 5 months as a student... My husband does get three weeks vacation, but he never has time to actually use it! He wasn't in trouble, just needed to solve problems. I guess it's good he is valuable!

    1. I know! Air Awakens is starting to feel a little like The Grisha series (which I loved). There is a Facebook release party on Tuesday at 7pm Eastern time & I can't wait! I feel the need to binge read this weekend.

  4. I don't think employers care about workers need for holiday time. Nobody seems to respect it these days and I can understand why you weren't happy. Hope you enjoy all your new reads!

    1. Yes, my husband never gets a real vacation! He works so hard. I feel (a little) guilty about getting the summers off, but I actually work super hard during school, and I need the time in the summer to calm down. When school starts, I am up at 5:30 and running.

  8. The Santa Barbara trip sounds wonderful...I haven't been in several years.

Valley of the Moon looks like a book I'd enjoy, and I've liked reading this author. Thanks for sharing, and enjoy your week.

    1. Valley Of The Moon was amazing. It was sort of like The Time Traveler's Wife. It also was set in the Bay Area (where I live) so that was a fun bonus. I will write a review of it soon.

    1. I am so thankful that my aunt is still with us. She is so much fun, and like a Mom to me. My Grandma (her mom) lived to 96, so I hope she will continue to be healthy. Have a great week.

    1. I'm on the fence over Welcome to Night Vale. My daughter and her friends love it. I think it's kind of like Douglas Adams's work (Hitchhiker's Guide To the Universe), which I did like. I think I will just keep reading.

  13. I loooove Carry On. It's not quite a sequel to Fangirl, since it's not actually Cath's writing or the actual-book-within-the-book, but Rowell playing with the characters and writing them as herself. I adore it, anyway! Hope you enjoy it.

    1. I just thought Fangirl was not only a sweet book, but had a lot to say about the writing process. I would love to write a novel someday, but I need to get over having people read and critique my prose. I am really looking forward to Carry On and continuing to learn more about Simon & Baz.

    1. Thank you, Mariska (What a pretty name). I think the art work on all of Elisa Kova's books are stunning. If you like fantasy, you should really read Air Awakens. It was really well done.

  16. I enjoyed Fangirl as well. It really made me curious to try more of her writing. And I listened to the first few Nightvale podcasts but wasn't quite grabbed, even though I did kinda like the weird angle. I may try again...

  19. Sounds like you had a nice break. Don't worry - my husband is also always working working working... Tell me something real does sound like a nice book and also close to home. There is an Afrikaans (I am from South Africa and Afrikaans is my mother tongue) author who wrote a similar book. Loved it so much and was fortunate to read it before my mom passed away. Will look into that one as well. Wishing you a lovely week and good luck with all your projects! I wasn't a huge fan of Fangirl, unfortunately. It's been my only RR book and it was disappointing so I don't know if I'll read her other books.
